Do I have to pay fees for units I withdraw from?
Whether you have to pay fees for units you withdraw from depends on whether you withdraw before or after the final date to withdraw without penalty, which we call the census date.
The key dates for withdrawing from units tell you when you can withdraw with and without financial penalty. Make sure you look at the right dates for the semester or teaching period you're enrolled in.
Before you withdraw from any units, make sure you understand how it will affect your enrolment, grades, fees or Centrelink payments.

I withdrew from units before the census date
If you withdraw from units before the census date (final date to withdraw without financial penalty), you won't have to pay fees for those units, and they won't count towards your HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP balances.
If you've already paid for those units, you may be able to have your fees refunded.

I withdrew from units after the census date
If you withdraw from units after the census date (final date to withdraw without financial penalty), you will have to pay for those units.
If you're withdrawing due to special circumstances, such as medical problems or the death of a family member, you may be able to apply to have your fees refunded, or HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP balance re-credited.

Withdrawal charges for domestic students
Withdrawal charges are set in accordance with the Manual of Policies and Procedures (MOPP). These charges apply to domestic fee paying and Commonwealth supported students.
- Withdraw on or before the census date
- No cancellation charge.
- Withdraw after the census date
- Cancellation charge is 100% of your student contribution amount.
Withdrawal charges for international students
Financial and academic penalties may apply to withdrawal of units.
If you withdraw from units, you may not complete your studies within the time specified in your confirmation of enrolment (eCoE). This means you can't meet the requirements of your student visa and it may be cancelled.
Prior to withdrawing from any units:
- If you're an international student studying a whole course at QUT, make sure you remain enrolled in at least one internal (on-campus) unit each semester or teaching period to stay enrolled in your course
- If you're a study abroad or exchange student studying at QUT for one or two semesters, make sure you're still enrolled in 36 credit points of internal (on-campus) units each semester.
