When making administrative decisions, we act in line with university policy.

If you believe an administrative decision has been made in error or is unjust, you can request a review of the decision.

Which decisions can be reviewed

We refer to specific kinds of university administration decisions as ‘administrative rulings’.

These include decisions on:

You can request an administrative ruling review of any of these decisions.

Decisions reviewed through other processes

There are different review processes for decisions on these topics:

  • review of grades
  • academic show cause
  • academic misconduct
  • academic rulings.

How to request a review

A review must be requested within 10 working days of receiving your original decision (unless otherwise noted in the submission instructions in Step 2).

Step 1: Understand the decision and its impact

Read the decision correspondence we've sent you on why the administrative ruling was made so you can understand the impact the decision has on your study. If you need more details, contact the area that sent you the correspondence.

Step 2: Prepare and submit your review request

Your application should include:

  • a statement that outlines the rationale for your review, demonstrating why the original decision was incorrect or unjust
  • new supporting documents, if available (examples of supporting documents are available on the Special circumstances page).

Email your statement and supporting documents to the contact for your administrative ruling and follow any additional requirements provided in the following table:

You can contact sa.hubprogression@qut.edu.au for further advice.

We’ll email you to confirm we’ve received your request.

What happens after you request a review

The Director, Student Administration (or delegate) will consider your original application, any information you include in your review request and the requirements of relevant policy and legislation.

The Director, Student Administration (or delegate) will then choose to either:

  • confirm the original decision
  • change the decision
  • set the original decision aside and make a new decision based on a new rationale.

You’ll be emailed with the outcome of your review request normally within 20 working days of us receiving it. However, if your request is complex or submitted during a peak period, it may take longer.

The decision of the Director, Student Administration (or delegate) is final and cannot be appealed further except for:

  • admission and scholarship applications, which can be appealed to the University Appeals Committee
  • withdrawal without penalty requests which can be appealed to the Administrative Review Tribunal for Commonwealth supported and HELP students.

While you wait for an outcome

We may not decide on an outcome before enrolments close, start of semester, census date or examinations date for the relevant semester.

Students should refer to correspondence they were sent of the original decision or to the relevant HiQ website page for advice while awaiting the outcome of a review, as this may differ depending on the process and circumstance.
