Overview

This clinical unit explores the scope of practice for a clinical exercise physiologist within the domains of cancer and mental health. It provides an understanding of the disease states and develops the exercise physiology professional competencies essential to practice within these domains. You will commence the development of your client consultation skills that will be further developed in XNH386 Clinical Skills for Exercise Physiologists.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Explain the basic biology of cancer, risk factors associated with the development of cancer, common diagnostic techniques, treatment and the side-effects and late-effects of cancer and its treatment.
  2. Explain the spectrum of mental health conditions, diagnosis, treatment, management and the side effects of treatment.
  3. Describe and discuss the role of exercise in assisting patients to better manage cancer or mental health conditions.
  4. Develop and demonstrate professional skill competencies and teamwork required for successful practice in the cancer and mental health fields including patient consultation skills, exercise programming skills and clinical reasoning regarding patient management strategies.
  5. Communicate clinical exercise physiology knowledge through verbal and written means in both an academic and clinical practice contexts.

Content

This unit is delivered across two modules of learning.
Module 1: Oncology
The oncology module will provide students with an understanding of:

  • cancer pathophysiology, diagnostics, treatment,treatment-related side effects, the latest oncology research;
  • It will also enable you to explore the evidence on the role that exercise has in the management during treatment and recovery from cancer treatment; and
  • the practical aspects will focus on exercise physiology skill competency development will include conducting a comprehensive oncology patient consultation. This information will then be applied to the formulation of a health and fitness assessment battery and the design of an exercise program for various cancer populations

Module 2: Mental Health Conditions
The mental health module will provide you with an in-depth understanding of:

  • various mental health conditions including depression and anxiety disorders;
  • the diagnosis and prognostic procedures, screening, common treatments and medications;
  • the role of exercise in the management of mental health conditions and treatment-related side effects;
  • exercise assessments and exercise interventions for clientele with mental health disorders; and
  • contraindications for exercise

Learning Approaches

The unit adopts a blended learning approach where you are to view filmed patient scenarios and come to class to discuss the scenarios, and where you will engage in collaborative activity with peers and tutors. You will have an opportunity to discuss various approaches to assessment, client management and provide a sound rationale for your approach.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback to Students
Assessment will be spaced throughout the semester to provide the opportunity for feedback on your learning to that point. Feedback in this unit is provided to you in the following ways:

  • you will be provided with verbal and/or written feedback on each piece of formative and summative assessment during the semester;
  • criteria sheet grading;
  • comments on summative assessment work in addition to criteria sheets; and
  • generic comments back to the cohort via QUT Canvas.

You are encouraged to communicate with the unit coordinator or unit tutor if you have any questions or concerns about the assessment items.
