Overview

Teachers of Health and Physical Education need skills in understanding the scientific basis of movement and exercise in order to educate students. This unit provides you opportunities to analyse and evaluate human movement and develop an understanding of the neuromuscular responses to exercise in children and youth. This will be done in an integrated way by using the practical elements in the physical activity workshops and labs so that your understanding of exercise science develops in the 'round' and not via isolated sub-disciplines. Contemporary problem solving in movement and exercise characteristically uses a multi-disciplinary approach. This unit will emulate that approach and will build on and connect with units studied to this point in the program.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Biomechanical analysis and evaluation of movement
  2. Develop an understanding of neuromuscular aspects of movementli
  3. Design and implement resistance training programs for children and youth
  4. How to analyse and evaluate the physiological demands of performance environments in terms of intensity of exercise, energy system use and specific components of fitness

Content

  1. Introductory Biomechanics
  2. Neuromuscular aspects of movement
  3. Resistance training for children and youth
  4. Evaluation of components of fitness and physical activity

B.2 Content selection and organisation
B.5 Literacy and numeracy strategies

Learning Approaches

This unit engages you in your learning through a theory to practice approach. Much of the learning in this unit will occur through the use of 'real world' experiences in practical workshop settings related to exercise and physical activity. Flipped Classroom arrangements, workshops and tutorials will also be engaged to develop learning of content. This will involve independent inquiry, readings, supplementary resources and the use additional online tasks, which can be used to lead workshop discussions, formative reflections about practical exercise tasks and what these might mean for young people.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback is this unit is provided to you in a variety of ways:

  • Formative assessment occurs continuously during the unit and includes teacher and peer verbal feedback on a variety of written, oral and practical tasks. These include group and individual practical activities, written tasks, teacher and student directed discussions.
  • In-class discussions and writing tasks related to unit content, provide opportunities for questioning and formative feedback.
  • Summative assessment criteria sheets aligned to the unit outcomes and with descriptors aligned to the specific assessment tasks.
  • Qualitative comments provided on summative tasks and/or associated criteria feedback sheets.

You are encouraged to communicate with the unit coordinator or unit tutor if you have any questions or concerns about the assessment items.

Assessment

Overview

Each assessment item is designed to measure knowledge, understanding, application, evaluation and justification of key principles of learning design stated in the learning outcomes. Formative practical activities undertaken within tutorials provide support to develop the relevant content, along with the cognitive, research and communication skills required for completion of summative tasks.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Workbook

You will complete four qualitative movement diagnosis tasks in practical workshops and complete associated workbook activities to demonstrate your knowledge, understanding and application of the science of human movement and physical activity forms. These tasks will result in four workbook submissions throughout the semester. This workbook and other workbook/laboratory book tasks in other units will form a growing portfolio of associated and integrated talks that will contribute towards a growing compendium of practical tasks for new HPE teachers. Course Learning Outcomes (Education - APST): B.1, B.2, B.5.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Weight: 60
Length: 4 pages per workbook
Individual/Group: Individual
Due (indicative): Week 3, Week 6, Week 8, and Week 12
Related Unit learning outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4

Assessment: Examination

Mixed (variable length) multiple choice questions and short answer questions with word limit parameters designed to assess your knowledge, understanding and specifically application of sport and exercise science knowledge as related to young people. The examination will be scheduled as a school-based exam with explicit time-frames for completion (concept/context response). Course Learning Outcomes (Education - APST): B.1, B.2, B.5.

Weight: 40
Length: 1.5 hours
Individual/Group: Individual
Due (indicative): Week 10
Related Unit learning outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.

Risk Assessment Statement

This unit involves active participation in physical activity. You are required to inform the unit coordinator and class tutor of any medical conditions, which may be influenced by physical involvement. You need to wear clothing and athletic shoes appropriate to the conditions. In most cases the practical sessions will be run in an outdoor environment. Appropriate consideration should be given to issues associated with sun safety, including items such as headwear, sunscreen, and sunglasses. There are no other risks beyond the ordinary.
