Overview

Environmental health, OHS and environmental management professionals are required to plan, conduct, oversee and/or evaluate risk assessments as part of their work. It is becoming increasingly important for organisations to undertake risk assessments to meet compliance obligations and to work towards longer term health, safety and environmental sustainability goals. This unit explores a range of risk assessment methods available for the assessment of occupational safety, occupational health, environmental management and environmental health risks.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Appraise and apply Environmental Health and/or Occupational Health and Safety risk assessment methods
  2. Evaluate sources of hazard and risk information on the likelihood and consequences of exposure
  3. Critique the various risk assessment methods to determine the strengths and limitations
  4. Determine and implement effective risk assessment strategies
  5. Communicate risk using language, writing styles and digital capabilities specific to professional practice and diverse audiences.

Content

Topics covered in this unit include: risk assessment frameworks, environmental health risk assessment (issues identification, hazard identification, dose-response assessment, toxicology, exposure assessment, risk characterisation); occupational health risk assessment, process safety risk assessment and ethics. In addition, the role of effective risk communication and consultation to promote a safe environment/culture will be examined.

You will gain a working knowledge of a range of risk assessment methods. The unit will include techniques for the selection of appropriate risk assessment methods and qualitative and quantitative risk assessments in a range of contexts.

Learning Approaches

To maximise your engagement with the learning materials in this unit, a combination of face to face (for internal students) lecture and regular Canvas Collaborate and asynchronous activities will enhance interactivity. Lectures and Canvas Collaborate sessions will be recorded to enable flexibility in the location, time and mode of study, with respect to work and life commitments. This Unit is available in both online and internal modes and all taught sessions are recorded for asynchronous access.

Students are expected to undertake self-directed learning and should pace their studies in line with the schedule provided on the online platform. Links to a range of readings/resources that expand on the material in the study modules will be provided.

Active participation and discussion in the taught sessions is strongly encouraged to allow for the exchange of ideas between staff and students and to expand upon the theory and knowledge undertaken within the study modules. Diverse interpretations and perspectives in informing risk assessment are discussed.

Students have access to various resources, including the Student Success Group and Library. Class and individual consultations with the unit coordinator and formative and summative feedback during the course and on the assessments are offered to support learning.

The unit embeds opportunities to demonstrate and improve industry relevant digital capabilities, including locating relevant literature and navigating data bases; sourcing, collating and critically analysing scholarly research related to EH; communicating with peers, colleagues, community members and senior managers through digital platforms; negotiating with internal systems to access, upload and download materials, etc.

Students will need to allocate on average 10 hours per week to successfully meet the learning outcomes in this Unit.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback will be provided to students on written assignments and there will be regular discussion sessions held on Online Collaborate sessions. Teaching staff will be available to answer questions and assist students achieve their learning outcomes. The assignments are based on real world scenarios that capture diverse perspectives for inclusion and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives to make sense of challenges and complexities involved in applying risk assessment models.

Assessment

Overview

Each assessment item is designed to assess your application of the knowledge and skills stated in the unit learning outcomes. The unit consists of two assessment items. The first assessment is a Report and applying risk assessment methods to investigate hazards and evaluate consequences of exposure. The second assessment is an examination where you apply knowledge of key concepts used in the unit. The assessments are designed to enable you to meet the unit aims and learning outcomes. Assessment will be submitted as per instruction in the Assessment section on the Learning Management System.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
