Overview

The purpose of ’Managing the Project’ is to integrate your learnings from the other units that you have studied in the MPM in order to plan, manage and execute a major and complex programme comprising multiple and related projects within a topical case study involving a real world styled venture.  ‘Managing the Project will occur within a robust governance and assurance setting which will guide the programme and projects through a well-defined stage gate process, into commissioning and hand-over, and finally benefits realisation after transition to business as usual.  In ‘Managing the Project’, you will develop and acquire practical programme/project management experience in a ‘real world styled’ venture within an authentic learning environment.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply advanced knowledge ofprogramme/ project management to complex project management problems.
  2. Identify, analyse and resolve typical programme/project management challenges and issues which arise in real world ventures using appropriate tools and techniques.
  3. Develop industry linkages and networks.
  4. Manage and lead multiple stakeholders and programme/project teams.
  5. Demonstrate effective written and oral communication in presenting to senior executives and Boards of Directors
  6. Respond appropriately to social, cultural, environmental and ethical issues on projects, incluiding from Indigenous cultural perspectives

Content

The emphasis throughout this unit will be on professional learning within an authentic environment. You will be asked to consider a work based case study to integrate and apply learnings gained through completing the units across the MPM. Topics covered include:                                                                                            •explore the nature of programme management,
•identify the key attributes need to be a good programme manager,
•review two major programme management approaches,
•select and tailor a programme management methodology to the unique characteristics of the programme and its accompanying context,
•investigate the common challenges and issues which undermine benefits realisation and operations readiness,
•implement appropriate processes for both benefits realisation and operations readiness, and
•examine the application of virtual programme teams in a global context. formulate a programme execution plan for a complex resources initiative in a socially and politically challenged environment and having a global setting; develop an operations readiness plan for the same initiative and craft a recovery plan for a major programme setback.                                                                                                                                                  

Learning Approaches

You will engage in both individual and group activities designed to develop your theoretical understanding and assist your exploration of the application of those theories to a range of 'real world styled' situations using topical scenarios and case studies. This unit is programme/project based, and incorporates experiential learning using a real world styled case study.

Through in-depth analysis and discussion, you will learn how to apply relevant frameworks, methods, tools and techniques to understand, evaluate, and manage projects and programs in context. 

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

There will be regular discussions through journal / email with your supervisor, where you'll report on what you have completed since your last meeting. This will be an opportunity to discuss any problems you may have encountered. Your supervisor should give feedback on your progress. Overview

You are assessed by an academic panel of at least 2 staff on the basis of quality of the developed written report and oral presentation. You will be assessed individually. This unit is designed to cater for your needs and interests and as such your achievement is determined ultimately by your own initiative and effort. Assignments give you the opportunity to work in groups. By doing so, you will be able to strengthen your collaboration skills and to yield assignment outcomes which benefit from blending a diversity of group members' professional, academic, social, and cultural backgrounds.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Discussion Forum

Contributions to various Canvas forum discussions.  In this assessment, you will contribute your thoughts along with persuasive arguments about five topical issues which will be posted on a Canvas forum throughout the semester.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Report and Presentation

In this assessment, you will develop a detailed programme/project execution plan for a topical real world styled case study which will be provided. Your plan will be presented and submitted to a mock CEO and Board of Directors who will determine whether the programme/project is ready for execution.

Assessment: Report

In this assessment, you will prepare a report for the COO recommending Operations Readiness Plan including Commissioning and Start-Up and Benefits Realisation Plan along with any recovery actions needed to support these plans for a real world case example which will be nominated in a list to be provided.
