Overview

This unit will furnish you with an appreciation of the nature and role of project management as a professional discipline. With a specific focus on aspects of project planning and project development, the unit will describe, clarify, and formalise project management of the front end of projects to prepare you for further postgraduate study or bring new knowledge and skills to your professional endeavours.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Discuss and demonstrate currency of knowledge of project planning and development.
  2. Select and apply appropriate tools and techniques to resolve typical project management issues and challenges related to project planning and development.
  3. Critically discuss and interpret issues related to performance of projects in the planning and development stage and be able to develop appropriate options.
  4. Demonstrate written and oral communication skills to industry and academic standards both in a team and project environment taking into account cultural considerations, including Indigeous cultural considerations.
  5. Reflect and respond to ethical issues on projects.

The topics in this unit include and focus on: Projects and Project Management; The Business Case; Scope Management; Stakeholder Management; Time Management; Cost Management; Risk Management; Quality Management; Human Resource Management (HR); Project Communications and Project Integration Management.

This assignment requires you to work in a team of two to four to develop and document a business case for a proposal of your choice.

Assessment

Overview

Assessment items for this unit will be made up of a combination of individual and group assignments and grades will be issued in accordance with Section C/5.3 of the QUT Manual of Policies and Procedures (MOPP). The assessment strategy is orientated towards activities which investigate the application of project management principles to “real world” situations. Criterion Referenced Assessments (CRAs) will be used to mark all assignments.

Assessment: Business Case

This assignment requires you to work in a team of two to four to develop and document a business case for a proposal of your choice.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Critique

In this assignment, you are required to review and prepare a written critique of an existing project business case. This project business case is provided in the assignment details and supporting resources sections of the briefing page.
