Overview

Acute nursing practice utilises complex evidence-based knowledge and management protocols that require specialist theoretical knowledge and technical skills to apply in the provision of person-centred care across the lifespan. The complex and dynamic health care environment requires you to have the ability to respond, adapt, implement, evaluate and communicate decisions based on scope and context of practice for a range of complex health care problems in a range of health care settings for individuals and families. In this unit you will focus on how to strengthen quality and safety of practice in acute care contexts.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply specialist knowledge and technical skills to assess context and culture in an acute care setting.
  2. Critically analyse complex issues impacting acute care patients and propose effective solutions to address a gap identified in your clinical workplace.
  3. Appraise and apply care pathways and models of care that embed diverse perspectives to ensure culturally safe practice.
  4. Collaborate and incorporate peer feedback to develop an evidence-based action plan in an acute care setting.

Content

This unit will cover the following topics:

  • Care pathways
  • Models of care
  • Interprofessional collaboration
  • Workplace culture and cultural change, and
  • Sustainable practice.

In this unit, you will learn through engaging in the following:

  • Workshops (online and/or face-to-face) to support knowledge development and academic literacy skills
  • Online self-directed learning
  • Peer review/feedback
  • Individual research and readings; and
  • Collaborative activities.

Assessment

Overview

The assessment for this unit is comprised of 2 summative items.

This unit will use online web-based text matching software that assists students to develop the academic skills required to correctly use and cite reference material as well as check citations to determine and avoid possible instances of plagiarism.

Assessment: Contextual analysis

You will explore context and culture in your acute care setting and undertake observations of practice. 

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Length: 1800 words

Assessment: Peer review and action plan

You will build on the contextual analysis, drawing on peer/mentor feedback and literature to develop a sustainable action plan for embedding a safety culture in your acute care setting.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
