Overview

Nurse practitioners provide patient-centred health care to populations across a broad range of social, demographic and health care contexts, including vulnerable groups.  This unit facilitates your understanding of the integration of nurse practitioner services within existing health services models to address national health priorities. The unit extends your leadership and management skills by challenging you to reflect upon the nurse practitioner role in the context of health service analysis and reform in contemporary Australian health care.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse and evaluate your health service with reference to determinants of health, consumer population needs, and primary health care and cultural safety principles
  2. Drawing on relevant literature, legislation and collaboration with key stakeholders, develop recommendations to enhance service provision
  3. Formulate a business plan for Nurse Practitioner service provision to improve population health outcomes in your area of speciality
  4. Demonstrate leadership and advanced professional communication skills.

Content

The unit is structured around a series of learning modules and webinars that develop your theoretical and practical understanding of the nurse practitioner role in contributing to policy and reform of health services. As you work through these modules you will progressively build knowledge and skills related to health service delivery and capacity to meet consumer needs. This unit provides the initial platform from which to explore and further your clinical and professional development as a nurse practitioner and clinical leader

Key areas addressed in this unit include:

Module 1: The nurse practitioner role in health service delivery and system level reform.

  • This module addresses primary health care and the determinants of health

Module 2: Leading practice change as nurse practitioners to address national health priorities

Module 3: Nurse practitioner legislation and jurisdictional variation
Module 4a: Culture and cultural safety

Module 4b: Indigenous Issues and Cultural Safety

Learning Approaches

This unit uses a blend of online activities and modules to develop analytical, evaluative and research skills. You will undertake a critical review of relevant evidence and practice to formulate strategies to enhance service provision. You will demonstrate high level professional communication skills by developing nurse practitioner model of care to optimise patient-centred service provision. You will build on your collaborative skills through discussion with key stakeholders seeking feedback. You will have the opportunity to develop negotiation and professional presentation skills in your clinical setting and during on-line peer discussion and debate.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Assessment will be spaced throughout the semester to provide the opportunity to develop your understanding of the nurse practitioner role and progress your model of care. You will be provided with detailed feedback on each assessment item to support your progress.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.

Resources

You will be guided in accessing other appropriate and contemporary resources throughout the semester.

Risk Assessment Statement

As a student undertaking this unit you are required to be working in your nominated clinical speciality area. As such, you will be exposed to risks encountered in the practice of nursing. Students undertaking workplace-based professional practice experience or clinical placement are required to follow the same health safety guidelines that apply to all staff in the workplace. In addition, measures to control exposure to risks include:

  • Orientation to the health care agency
  • Appropriate theoretical and practical preparation

Emergency procedures

All facilities require that their health workers become familiar with local emergency procedures. It is your responsibility to locate fire exits, emergency procedures and complete CPR drill and fire safety as required.

Health status and immunisation requirements

It is strongly recommended that you will:

  • Endeavour at all times to maintain your personal health at a high level. Be fit to work and have had a reasonable rest period between shifts.
  • Review your current immunisation status.
  • Inform the Unit Coordinator, Course Coordinator or Clinical Support Team if you are aware of any personal condition, which may present a risk to yourself or consumers, other students, health care agency staff or the general public while undertaking professional practice experience or clinical placement.

The management of your health facility has the right to send you home if, in their opinion, it is unsafe for you to work that day.

Confidentiality

As a student in the clinical area, you must treat all information regarding clients and their families with the utmost confidentiality. Information that is documented as part of your learning experiences must preserve client anonymity and confidentiality. Classroom discussion should also adhere to these principles.
