Overview
Corporate sustainability is central to ongoing organisational success. A sustainable organisation manages its processes, products and people in an ecologically aware and socially responsible way. The ability to plan and manage the change programs needed to achieve corporate sustainability goals is an integral management competency. Sustainable change requires consideration of the fit of the organisation to its contexts (MGB133); organisational continuity (MGB236 & MGB234), efficiency (MGB235 & MGB237), and effective people management (MGB130). It also requires consideration of multi-stakeholder and Indigenous perspectives, legal and societal expectations, and human dimensions of change. This unit will help you develop the skills and tools needed to make a significant contribution to sustainable and socially responsible change. It is an important parallel for the capstone unit, where these diverse and intersecting responsibilities are applied.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Critique and apply knowledge of sustainability, stakeholder engagement and change management theories and approaches.
- Draw on theory and pratice to analyse performance issues related to managing sustainable organisations and evaluate tools and strategies to address them.
- Critically apply knowledge of ethical theory and justify approaches to respond to sustainability issues in organisations.
- Propose change management strategies to address identified sustainability issues in organisations, taking account of socially responsible business practices.
- Use written and oral communication skills to persuade and present knowledge, ideas and analysis of sustainability issues and change management strategies.
Content
The content of this unit integrates key concepts and ideas relevant to an understanding of sustainable change. The topic areas covered include: sustainable business models and approaches; ethical stakeholder engagement; corporate social responsibility; the dynamics and complexity of organisational change; and critical evaluation of change approaches.
Learning Approaches
The teaching and learning approach in this unit incorporates a number of methods to engage students and link theory with practice. The delivery mode is lectures and tutorials which involve a range of approaches to create interactive learning experiences. Lectures involve the use of videos, discussion, case analysis, and the application of theory. Tutorials utilise case analysis, group and small group discussions, worked examples, presentations and other activities. A range of online activities and resources are also provided to support learning.
This unit uses text authentication tools via Canvas that assists students to develop the academic skills required to correctly use and cite reference material as well as to check citations and determine possible instances of plagiarism. You will be expected to submit draft and/or final versions of one or more assignments using the text authentication tool. Your Unit Coordinator will provide detailed information on how the software will be used in this unit.
COVID-19 restrictions may require changes to the planned Learning Approaches described here. Students should refer to the unit Canvas site for the latest information.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:
- Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
- Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary
- Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
- Indirect: to the whole class

Academic Integrity
Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.
Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.
You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.
Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
