Overview

Managing knowledge and innovation are key drivers of success for many of today's firms and ventures and are integral to an organisation's ability to survive and thrive in a dynamic and competitive marketplace. The purpose of Managing Knowledge & Innovation is to extend your understanding of the human and technical systems of organisations by focusing on how information and knowledge can be harnessed for innovation and competitive advantage. With a focus on the theories and frameworks to inform decisions for organising human and technical systems, this unit develops your understanding of the meso-level responsibilities of management, and parallels. 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Identify a wide range of conceptual and practical issues that need to be managed for knowledge and innovation.
  2. Apply knowledge management and innovation management frameworks to analyse and critique business issues
  3. Critique existing knowledge and innovation management practices in organizations and recommend and justify improvements
  4. Apply reflective practice to assess the effectiveness and reasoning to make decisions
  5. Communicate knowledge and innovation management concepts and solutions for specialist and professional audiences

Content

The content of this unit equips you with a strong conceptual and critical foundation for understanding current trends in knowledge and innovation management and encourages your ability to think critically and creatively. You will be introduced to a range of perspectives on importance of knowledge as a driver for innovation and value creation and gain a critical grounding in the tools, methods and techniques used in innovation management. The content is divided into three sections: 

  • Understanding Innovation, Knowledge and Creativity 
  • Managing for Innovation and Knowledge 
  • Developing dynamic capabilities of innovation

Learning Approaches

The learning experiences in this unit incorporate a blend of face-to-face and online learning through application and use of an innovation simulation. The unit draws on a range of resources each week to explore innovation, knowledge and creativity. The design of this unit aims to foster innovative thought processes through ideation and evaluation of concepts. Students engage in critical enquiry by reflecting on the connection of innovation theory with their experiences of developing innovative business solutions. Class time in this unit has a high focus on active learning. The activities in the tutorials are closely aligned with the lecture content and the assessment activities; it is highly recommended that students attend all face-to-face classes.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include: 

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation 
  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary 
  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation 
  • Indirect: to the whole class 

Assessment

Overview

Assessments in this unit are structured to provide you with a broad developmental understanding of how knowledge can be managed to support innovation and creativity in organisations.

Students may be required to attend campus or an assessment centre for the purposes of assessment, regardless of the attendance mode for the unit.

Assessment: Innovation Simulation

You will use an online simulation tool to manage the innovation process for a company. Based on the simulation, you will write a reflective analysis of your decision to evaluate the outcome of your innovation solution and reflect on how the innovation process is approached.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Innovation Case Study

You are required to write a real-world critical appraisal of an innovation undertaken by one of the industry or government organisation of your choice. In this assignment, you need to critically evaluate different dimensions and features of the innovation and provide creative recommendations for the further improvement of the innovation.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Knowledge Management Plan

You have been appointed by a knowledge management officer to apply knowledge management frameworks to develop an action plan to address an emerging business issue.  You will propose an innovative solutions and make recommendations for the knowledge management and innovation managing requirements that demonstrate the feasibility and impact of the solution.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
