Overview

This unit provides an opportunity to develop an extended creative writing project in your preferred and strongest genre and form. It will allow you to plan and propose an extended piece of creative work through a series of intensive highly participatory tutorials in collaboration with peer critique groups. Though the major covers a range of writing genres, you choose your strongest genre and write with both breadth and complexity. This unit supports you to demonstrate that you have developed a sophisticated voice or style over the three years of study. The piece of work commenced here will continue to be built on in KWB326 Creative Writing Project 2.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Develop a plan for a sustained piece of creative writing.
  2. Write a sustained piece of creative writing to industry standards.
  3. Write and rewrite collaboratively with peer critique groups.
  4. Analyse and provide sophisticated editorial input on manuscript drafts across a wide range of genres and styles.

Content

This unit includes face-to-face and online lectures and tutorials designed to facilitate the development of professional reading, editing and writing skills. The unit will assist you to plan, develop, research, write, edit and submit a sustained creative piece, to a professional standard.

Learning Approaches

This unit will be taught through an interdependent mixture of:

  • formal classroom Writing and Reading Discussion Groups
  • peer writing activities
  • individual student-directed learning.

You will be expected to display a significant ability for self-directed research and learning, as well as collaborative discussions with peers.

You will receive formative feedback on your progress in this unit during tutorials and discussions throughout the semester.

Overview

There are two assessment items for this unit. The first is a series of peer reviews that are designed to develop your abilities to iteratively improve your own creative work. The second assessment item is a project proposal and substantial piece of creative writing.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Peer Critique

Submission Development - A series of activities at key points in the semester designed to develop your abilities to iteratively improve your own creative work, to effectively critique other's work, and to enact strategic plans in the submission of professional standard manuscripts.

  • You will be placed into groups for 3 editing rounds. At the end of each round you will submit reviews and assign a grade for each of your group members. At the end of the semester you will receive a grade which is the average of all grades given to you by your peers for all 3 editing rounds. The assessment includes both formative and summative feedback.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Assessment: Sustained Creative Work

A project proposal and a sustained creative written piece, or agreed equivalent such as a coherent collection of poetry or short stories, submitted to industry standards for an unsolicited manuscript.

To enable your full participation in the virtual learning environment, for example, participating in online activities and engaging with online learning materials, you will need access to a reliable computer with an internet connection, webcam, headset and microphone, as well as a learning environment where you are able to fully participate undisturbed when required.
