Overview

This unit provides a strong foundation in the practices and concepts associated with the creation of CGI assets for use within real-time graphics production. Applications of real-time 3D graphics now extend beyond the commonplace use in games into fields such as virtual production, virtual reality, augmented reality film and TV production offering new methods of production, storytelling and interactive experiences. The creation of these experiences requires a firm grounding in the practices, concepts and skills associated with real-time production and asset creation for use in a real-time 3D engine. This unit allows you to take advantage of 3D skills and knowledge developed during KNB127 CGI Fundamentals while laying the critical foundational knowledge and skills needed for more advanced practices undertaken in KNB217. It is a starting point to incorporating real-time technologies into your capstone projects.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of the techniques and concepts underpinning creation of real-time assets.
  2. Demonstrate technical proficiency in the production of creation of real-time assets for use in a real-time 3D engine.
  3. Represent and promote your real-time outcomes for critique and critical and self reflection.
  4. Demonstrate complex problem solving through iterative experimentation and the creative and critical development of ideas and outcomes for use in a real-time 3D engine.

Content

This unit connects theoretical aspects of real-time production with examples and practical applications in a studio environment. Allowing students an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in real-time computer graphics.

Learning Approaches

This unit will incorporate problem-based learning, supported by online video content and readings covering the theoretical and technical aspects of 3D real-time production. During the classes, you will build upon the readings and video content through a series of practical exercises and production problems.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will receive formative feedback on your progress in this unit during class discussions throughout the semester.

Additionally, feedback in this unit is provided to you in the following ways:

  • criteria sheet grading of summative pieces
  • comments on summative assessment outcomes in addition to criteria sheets via in-class discussions and/or QUT Blackboard
  • general comments back to the cohort via QUT Blackboard and within classes.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
