Overview

This unit aids you to refine your creative strengths in a focused area of practice connecting these strengths with the development of a professional and artistic identity. It enables you to identify an individual specialisation and demonstrate your musical skills through the creation of new works. You will situate your practice within a well-defined artistic and professional field and realise musical outcomes through engagement in authentic learning and assessment activities. Professional musicians must develop a critical understanding of the relationship between their music making, its artistic contexts and audiences. This unit draws on the practical skills gained in the previous two Music Creation units, advancing on the development of more focused areas of musical expertise and specialisation. As the third of four units, the unit provides you with an opportunity to envision and realise a deep engagement with specific areas of creative practice.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply creativity and technical proficiency within a specific area of musical practice.
  2. Conceive, develop, and realise new musical works, individually and in collaboration with peers, that define you as a unique creative practitioner.
  3. Critically reflect on your own work and that of your peers in order to manage and refine your musical creative practice and effectively communicate this to audiences.
  4. Demonstrate a broad knowledge of historical and contemporary cultural contexts that situates your musical creative practice in a particular field.

Content

The content of this unit includes theoretical and practical resources that will support the development of specialised creative practice, encouraging you to develop musical and artistic skills in areas of individual relevance. The content is designed to encourage the integration of theory and practice through guided activities with peers and staff.

Learning Approaches

During this unit you will engage in both online and face to face contexts, with teaching staff whose areas of expertise span a wide range of established and emerging practices. Development of more advanced practical skills in, and knowledge of, your own area of specialisation is at the core of this unit. In addition to this, you will work with and critique the work of peers. The unit combines supervised learning approaches and authentic tasks.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback in this unit is provided to you in the following ways:

  • feedback from peers during in person and online learning activities
  • feedback on your portfolio of work as the semester progresses
  • comments on assessments communicated to the cohort via your Canvas unit website
  • feedback via criterion-based grading sheets.

Assessment

Overview

This unit requires you to demonstrate evidence of developing knowledge, skills and self-direction in music making. The first assessment item is a research project (40%) where you provide thorough contextual reviews of your individual field of professional practice. The second assessment item asks you to demonstrate advanced level creative skills in your field through a portfolio of creative work (60%). The portfolio is developed progressively throughout semester and informed by your research for the first assessment item.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
