Overview

This online unit introduces research paradigms, strategies, methods and modes of presentation used in practice-led research; outlines and develops research skills, including academic protocols and advanced information retrieval skills; provides content common across a range of conceptual frameworks and disciplines, and relevant research approaches. There are many forms of enquiry suited to the diverse range of disciplines which make up the Creative Industries. These forms of enquiry typically fall within qualitative research traditions, creative practice as research and applied commercial research. This unit plays a key role in your research degree by introducing you to the most appropriate form of enquiry for your study and providing you with the tools for designing, implementing and evaluating that study within a Creative Industries context.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Identify the paradigms, strategies and methods associated with research in the creative industries
  2. Construct and deliver a presentation that outlines your research
  3. Retrieve information using information technology and library resources
  4. Understand & articulate specific issues that arise around practice-led research.

Content

This unit addresses content such as:
1. Research fundamentals (what is research' what am I researching' what research methods are available' what are their assumptions and biases')
2. Research protocols (ethics, plagiarism, copyright & IP)
3. Research skills in information retrieval and writing (information-retrieval skills, evaluation and analysis of data, synthesizing information and constructing an argument)
4. Research strategies and approaches (how do I design, conduct and present my research?)

Learning Approaches

This unit will be delivered through a 3-week online intensive block of teaching within the Creative Industries. It will feature use of online and classroom based materials through a combination of live streamed and pre-recorded lectures, seminars, workshops, and structured exercises. You will have opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills through participation in self-directed and group learning activities which encourage both independent and collaborative learning. This unit fosters a commitment to professionalism and ethical practice.

Formative assessment occurs through peer and expert feedback on the assignment and encourages debate around issues associated with the unit content, in conjunction with lecture, tutorial and online guidance that incorporates ongoing assessment tasks.

Assessment: Annotated Bibliography

This assignment will assist you in designing and developing your final research proposal required for assessment 2. It is divided into three sections: Project overview; Annotated bibliography; and brief Literature review.

Criteria for assessment:
*demonstrated understanding of research vocabulary;
*clear relationship between research topic, background, design and methods;
*clarity of expression, and spoken presentation, including use of any multi-media elements.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
