Overview

This unit is an intensive “startup bootcamp” experience covering knowledge and tools to transform a creative idea into a creative enterprise. You will develop an understanding of enterprise and what constitutes an entrepreneurial mindset, identify opportunities, and develop viable concepts that address a real world need. The unit aims to develop an appreciation of entrepreneurship in the creative economy through authentic activities which develop a concept for a new creative enterprise. You will have the tools and ability to understand the feasibility of your idea and how you might position this innovative concept for further development.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate and apply key principles and concepts of entrepreneurship and innovation within the contemporary creative industries.
  2. Identify, analyse and evaluate entrepreneurial opportunities.
  3. Develop a viable plan for a creative enterprise.
  4. Employ professional communication skills to present ideas in multiple media forms.

Content

This unit will cover topics including:

  • Startups and Creative Enterprise
  • Recognising and analysing opportunities
  • Social entrepreneurship
  • Innovation and creative development
  • Funding, financing and investment
  • Intellectual property, patents and brands
  • Legal, ethical social and environmental issues for enterprise
  • Start-up culture and personal performance awareness.

Learning Approaches

This unit involves participation in an intensive “startup bootcamp” run in partnership with QUT Entrepreneurship. The bootcamp will involve working in small teams, supported by industry mentors, to generate a position for a creative enterprise. Proposals will be presented to a panel of academic and industry mentors. The intensive experience will be supported with preparatory online modules. After completion of the bootcamp you will reflect upon the experience and analyse the pitch in order to develop a viable strategy to develop your venture further.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will receive feedback that helps you improve your learning as the unit progresses. This may be formally or informally, and may be in some or all of the following ways:

  • through a range of individual and collaborative formative exercises
  • through iterative feedback and development in the intensive bootcamps
  • consultation with tutors about concepts and problems as you complete learning activities and prepare assessments
  • peer-to-peer exchanges as you undertake group projects
  • communications to all students via the unit Canvas website
  • individually, on assessment grading forms.

Assessment

Overview

There are three assessments for this unit: two individual and one group. The first assessment is completed in weekly stages that formatively assesses and builds your understanding of creative enterprise and entrepreneurship in preparation for the intensive “start-up bootcamp” component of the unit. The second is a group oral presentation during the intensive period where you demonstrate your ability to generate and develop a viable concept for a new creative enterprise as part of a team, and pitch that to an audience. For the final summative assessment piece you individually develop a reflective and analytical plan that builds on the group creative enterprise oral presentation to potentially further the establishment and growth of the venture.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
