Overview

The ability to apply advanced knowledge and skills with a high level of autonomy is a hallmark of postgraduate education at the Masters level. By undertaking a scholarly piece of work this unit gives you the opportunity to consolidate, extend and apply the skills that you have gained to date in an area that is relevant to your field of study, by demonstrating creativity and initiative to analyse and synthesise knowledge.

PU86 Master of Public Health students must have successfully completed HLN707 Research Methods in Health before undertaking this unit.

NS80 and NS88 students must have successfully completed NSN434 Evidence Based Practice and Research Design before undertaking this unit.

Students enrolled through the School of Nursing will be contacted by the discipline lead to discuss support. The summer offering is only available to NS88 Master of Nurse Practitioner students.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate contemporary literature in relation to a complex problem, issue or question;
  2. Develop an appropriate research plan for addressing the identified problem, issue or question;
  3. Critically interpret project findings, draw conclusions and make recommendations for future work in the area;
  4. Communicate your project outcomes in accordance with accepted standards of scholarship, presentation and style.

Content

The content of your project will depend on the topic that you choose. Areas of general learning focus on the expectations of scholarly project work which include:

  • Critically analysing and synthesising relevant literature
  • Identifying a problem/issue/question
  • Collecting and analysing the results
  • Reflecting critically on the project and drawing conclusions
  • Communicating the project.

Learning Approaches

Students from four disciplines enrol in this unit: Public Health, Health Management, Health, Safety and Environment, and Nursing. The format of project supervision will differ across these four disciplines.
Public Health and Nursing students will be supported by a discipline coordinator.  Health, Safety and Environment students will have a project supervisor. Health Management students will be supported by either a discipline coordinator or be individually supervised.  Consultation with your coordinator or supervisor will provide you with direction and advice regarding your project.
Students will be supported to complete the project through a Canvas unit site that provides reading and visual resources.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Academic support through early formal, formative feedback to students is a priority. You will receive formative feedback on your work-in-progress through consultations with your supervisor or discipline coordinator. All students will be required to develop a Learning Contract. This should be provided to your discipline coordinator or supervisor by the end of the third week of semester. Formative feedback will be provided on this contract. Additionally all students should consult with their discipline coordinator or supervisor throughout semester for formative feedback on drafts.

Assessment

Overview

The sole summative assessment item for the 24 credit point Project is the submission of a high quality piece of scholarly work.
This unit will use online web based text matching software that assists students to develop the academic skills required to correctly use and cite reference material as well as check citations to determine and avoid possible instances of plagiarism

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
