Overview

IP rights are the legal framework that applies to the creation, acquisition, management and disposal of intangible property. In particular, they facilitate commercial transactions in intangible proprietary rights, and provide a basis for rewarding intellectual effort. Developing and implementing an effective IP identification and management strategy is essential in strategic procurement projects.

This unit aims to develop students understanding of the strategic options for identifying IP requirements, managing and protecting IP effectively throughout the program/project lifecycle.

This unit has been included in the program to provide students with the knowledge and skills to be able appropriately manage and protect intellectual property rights using recognised best practice for strategic procurement projects, and is offered at this point in the program to complement other units in the Strategic Procurement elective strand.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse a project and make recommendations regarding the processes and methods of acquiring IP assets in the context of strategic procurements. HO 2.1, PC 3.1
  2. Determine issues and processes related to IP management best practice, including in the context of international treaties and cross border transactions. KS 1.2, SEC 5.1
  3. Apply knowledge and understanding of the relevant policies, concepts and objectives of effective IP management within a complex business environment as part of a strategic procurement activity. KS 1.1
  4. Critically assess the implementation of IP management strategy, ensuring compliance with legal IP principles and practices at local, national and global business environments. HO 2.2, SEC 5.1

Learning Approaches

There is a commitment to critical inquiry and intellectual debate in regard to the material covered, and students are encouraged to relate the theories and research discussed to situations known to them.
A blended learning approach is taken with this unit. Students engage with the theories, research and practice through a blend of:

  • Guided instruction, learning activities and learning resources presented in a comprehensive electronic learning guide. Students are expected to engage with the readings and learning activities in the learning guide prior to face to face sessions and online webinars.
  • A comprehensive set of readings, cases, workplace documents and other authentic materials are provided to support student access to the content of the unit. Where appropriate electronic and printed textbooks will also be provided.
  • Periodic intensive face-to-face sessions where students actively engage in exploring the concepts, issues and cases provided in the learning guide. A focus on facilitated group learning and collaboration is a feature of these sessions.
  • Scheduled synchronous webinars to allow students to explore concepts more fully in live virtual teaching sessions with the academic coordinator.
  • A Canvas learning site providing additional materials such as podcasts, podcasts, audio and video files and computer simulations which can be accessed through the life of the unit.
  • A variety of iPad applications to support collaboration and document sharing.
    This unit is undertaken only in the Strategic Procurement Study Area and builds on the knowledge and skill developed in GSZ510 Complex Projects and the Law. It also has a strong relationship with GSZ513 Managing Innovation in Team Based Organisations.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive a variety of formative feedback throughout this unit.
Informally, feedback will be given verbally in class through class discussions and during the debriefing of learning activities.
Direct feedback will be available to those students who request a private or group consultation session with the lecturer.
Formal feedback will be received on both formative and summative assessment tasks through a Criterion Reference Assessment sheet, which will also include written feedback on the assessment task. The Criterion Reference Assessment Sheet will be available in the unit Canvas site at the commencement of the unit. Students will receive feedback on their formative assessment task prior to their summative assessment task being submitted.

Critical Analysis of IP Management Practices within a Strategic Project or Organisational Context
You are to undertake a critical analysis of IP Management practices in an organisation (to be provided or choice to be approved by the Unit Coordinator). You are required to identify and analyse how IP was managed in this project in the context of the 'IP Management Lifecycle' and organisational governance issues. Through this analysis you need to address: what was particularly effective'; what was missing and/or ineffective and the potential consequences for the project and the organisation; and what recommendation would you make to enhance IP Management in the organisation'.
