Overview

In this unit, you will develop your understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing and investigate how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and perspectives are represented and incorporated into a variety of Australian education experiences. This unit will assist you to interrogate the foundations of your own ways of knowing and develop your abilities to analyse the cultural contexts that underpin education practices in Australia. These understandings will contribute to the development of your own critical practice relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education. The learning in this unit provides essential insights for professionals who design and deliver education initiatives in any field with and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, in diverse educational contexts. 

 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a body of knowledge relating to recent developments in practice relevant to incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing in education experiences. (CLO1.1)
  2. Use cognitive and critical reflection skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and professional practice or scholarship relating to respectful inclusions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges and perspectives in education experiences. (CLO2.1)
  3. Demonstrate technical and communication skills to design, evaluate implement, analyse and theorise about developments that contribute to the incorporation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing in education experiences. (CLO2.4)
  4. Apply a high level of personal autonomy and accountability when applying knowledge and skills with creativity and initiative to new situations related the incorporation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges and perspectives in education experiences. (CLO3.1)

  • Current initiatives in sharing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge for education purposes
  • Protocols for appropriate knowledge practice

In this unit you will learn through engaging in the following:

During the unit, you will be required to understand, critically reflect, analyse, synthesise and apply the presented concepts to your own education practice and knowledge traditions.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will receive feedback on your progress in understanding unit concepts and skills by participating in weekly asynchronous online discussion forums and online learning activities related to the assessment tasks.Specific comments will be provided by your marker on your first assessment that can inform your performance on the second assessment. Detailed feedback will be provided on both assessment submissions.

Formative feedback in this unit will include feedback on one reflection from assessment task 1.

Assessment

Overview

Assessment in this unit enables you to demonstrate your knowledge and understandings related to respectful inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and knowledge specific to your education context in Australia.

Assessment 1 requires you to reflect on your own knowledge frameworks and ways of knowing as you learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing, and the ways in which knowledge and education practices intersect.

Assessment 2 requires you to critically analyse how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge sharing initiatives can be respectfully incorporated into an education context you are familiar with.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Reflective journal

Submit four reflections that respond to stimuli provided in the first four weeks of study. These reflections will allow you to critically reflect on:

  • your own ways of knowing,
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing,
  • the connection between knowledge and education, and
  • culturally-informed education practices.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Critique

Analyse an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander education resource that can be used to incorporate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges and/or perspectives into an education experience. Explain and navigate the critical issues related to using this resource in an education experience.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
