Overview
This unit will introduce you to core counselling techniques and communication skills that underpin effective helping strategies used by counsellors in a range of helping professions. The unit will assist you to understand and use particular skills that help to increase your own self-awareness and awareness of the needs of others. The aim of effective counselling is to develop the capacity of clients to problem-solve and to work towards their goals and potential.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Demonstrate a body of knowledge including understanding recent developments in the field of counselling psychology (CLO1.1).
- Demonstrate cognitive and critical reflection skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and professional practice or scholarship of counselling psychology (CLO2.1).
- Demonstrate technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyse and theorise about developments in counselling psychology that contribute to professional practice or scholarship (CLO2.4).
- Apply knowledge of counselling theories and counselling skills with creativity and initiative to new situations in professional practice and/or for further learning with high level personal autonomy and accountability (CLO3.1).
- Apply knowledge and counselling skills to plan and execute a substantial research based project, capstone experience or piece of scholarship (CLO3.2).
Content
This unit will introduce:
- Issues relating to self as they impinge upon our relationships with others.
- The development of counselling psychology and the personal characteristics associated with effective counsellors.
- The development and maintenance of a counselling relationship.
- A range of counselling skills including: building rapport, active listening, observation, attending, body language, reflection of feelings and content, questioning, paraphrasing, summarising and normalising.
- Counselling theories with particular use in the school setting.

- Readings
- Activities.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
You will gain feedback in this unit by participating in regular online discussion forums and collaborative learning activities. Assessment will receive criteria based grading and comments and the criteria will be considered by the cohort prior to assessment submission. Feedback should enhance learning in further study regarding advanced counselling.
Formative feedback in this unit will include feedback on your explanation and evaluation of two scholarly sources related to educational counselling, designed to support your learning and to provide a foundation for both assessment tasks.

Assessment: Literature Review
A critical review of an area of literature related to counselling.
This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
Assessment: Demonstration
Video recording of counselling session and evaluative report.
