Overview

As well as developing a sound knowledge base, studying school guidance and counselling requires the development of skills to apply this knowledge in practical settings in schools. This unit provides you with the opportunity to apply your learnings during one or more supervised practicums and to reflect on your learnings during individual and group supervision sessions and a written task.

This is a designated unit which is essential to your course progression. Designated units include professional experience units, units requiring the development of particular skills, and units requiring demonstration of certain personal qualities. If you fail to achieve a satisfactory level of performance in a designated unit, you may be excluded from enrolment or will be put on academic probation. If you fail a designated unit twice within your course, you may be excluded. Supplementary assessment is not available on designated units.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a body of knowledge including understanding recent developments in the practice of school guidance and counselling (CLO1.1).
  2. Demonstrate cognitive and critical reflection skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and professional practice in school guidance and counselling (CLO2.1).
  3. Application of knowledge and skills with creativity and initiative to new situations in school guidance and counselling practice with high level personal autonomy and accountability (CLO3.1).
  4. Apply knowledge and skills to plan and execute a capstone experience or piece of scholarship in an educational guidance and counselling professional practice context (CLO3.2).

Content

There is no course work involved in this unit.

This unit provides two options for students.  Option one is highly recommended.

Option one: You will participate in a 50 hour practicum in one or more approved school settings during the semester you undertake this unit. You will complete the practicum within a primary, secondary or special education school setting under the supervision of a practising Guidance Officer/Counsellor. You are responsible for organising your availability to participate in this 50 hour practicum.

Option two:  You will complete an alternative assessment task rather than participating in a practicum. This option is provided for students whose personal or professional circumstances prevent them from participating in a 50 hour practicum during the semester.

All students will participate in one hour of individual supervision and one session of group supervision with the unit coordinator (or delegate). These sessions can be face-to-face, over the phone, or on-line.

Students will be required to complete and submit documentation regarding the various aspects of practicums and supervision.

Learning Approaches

Please note that as you are “in training” – you will not be permitted to counsel students in a school setting during your practicum. It is important that you abide with the expectations of your supervising school and be as helpful as you can and learn as much as you can during your practicum.

You will participate in one hour of individual supervision and one session of group supervision with your Unit Coordinator (or delegate). These sessions can be face-to-face, over the phone, or on-line and will be similar in process to the way that Guidance Officers/Counsellors participate in clinical supervision.

Students choosing option one will reflect on their learnings from practicum and supervision in their final assessment.

Students choosing option two will reflect on their learnings from the course and supervision in their final assessment and will complete an additional assessment task in lieu of participating in practicum.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Formative feedback is provided through supervision with your QUT Unit Coordinator (or delegate), unit teachers and your practicum supervisor/s.

Assessment

Overview

Students choosing option one will submit a portfolio that includes required evidence from practicums and supervision sessions as well as a reflective essay. The reflective essay will discuss your learnings from your practicums and supervision.

Students choosing option two will submit a portfolio that includes required evidence from supervision sessions, a reflective essay and an additional assessment task in lieu of participating in practicum. The reflective essay will discuss your learnings from your course participation and supervision. The additional assessment task will require short answer responses to a selection of questions related to the professional practice of Guidance Officers/Counsellors.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
