Overview

This unit is project-based and introduces students to research methods and methodologies that have relevance to designers. An understanding of research is important for design practice in order to understand existing conditions and needs, to test ideas, to understand the implications of design-decisions, to evaluate how a design intervention is used, and to anticipate changes that will need to be made. Research is critical to advancing design practice and ensuring decisions can be made based on evidence.  

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply design research processes in general philosophical, theoretical and methodological terms, developing the knowledge and skills to evaluate research techniques.
  2. Demonstrate independent written and verbal skills to communicate research proposals and findings to diverse audiences.
  3. Collect and analyse data in a systematic, rigorous and ethical way.

Content

The major topics covered in this unit will include:

  • the philosophical context of research on, for and by design
  • quantitative and qualitative methodologies and methods relevant to design
  • research rigor and ethics
  • developing a research plan
  • literature searching and review
  • data gathering and analysis
  • research dissemination and reporting to multiple audiences.

Learning Approaches

In this unit you will have the opportunity to learn through active engagement with the interactive learning resources, peer learning, moderated and facilitated discussions, learning events and self-directed learning materials. As such, your learning in this unit will be fostered through weekly activities and the completion of a research project.

  • verbal/written feedback from staff at completion of projects.

Assessment

Overview

Assessment will take the form of two projects. While each project will be assessed for grading at the completion of the project, there will also be ongoing formative feedback throughout the semester, to guide your progress. Assessment expectations will be provided through criteria referenced assessment (CRA) sheets, and also discussed during relevant lectures and presentations.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Research Proposal

Written research proposal for a project to be conducted on a topic of your choice (with approval of the teaching team). The proposal must include an analysis of existing research, articulation of the research problem, research question, significance and proposed method to conduct the research.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Due (indicative): Mid teaching period

Assessment: Research Project

You will complete a research project based on the proposal you prepared for assessment one. For this assessment you will prepare a report in text and diagrams (as appropriate) to explain the background, methodology, method(s), findings, and implications of the research project.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
