Overview

This unit focuses on the role of professional practice management and its significance to industrial design. It covers: professional practice and management, career paths in Industrial Design, management of design projects, Design documentation and the role of design administration, intellectual property, and designer-client relationships. The unit provides an overview of the relationship between product design and professional practice. It addresses professional practice management and how you can use this knowledge to manage your own projects. This unit also provides an overview of both current and potential future trends in the Industrial Design profession.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

1. Knowledge of principles of Industrial Design practice including design ethics, law, governance and scholarship.
2. Ability to visually, verbally and in writing communicate with diverse and/or focussed audience
3. Demonstration of an advanced level of achievement in professional design, professional portfolio production, communication and presentation of design work
4. Demonstration of a planned, methodological and professional approach to project management that displays initiative

Overview

The assessment will comprise formative (to find out how your work is progressing) and summative assessment (to grade your work against expected outcome). The unit is assessed by applying criterion referenced assessment relevant to each assessment task.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked. If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.

Assessment: Portfolio

A compilation of student’s design work, presented in a form consistent with professional Industrial Design standards.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Intellectual Property

Preparation of design registration and intellectual property documentation.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
