Overview

This unit aims to provide an advanced knowledge of fashion design including the conceptual framing and situated context of your practice. It promotes critical analysis, design prototyping and organisational skills required to formulate an extended independently-led fashion project across DFH701 and DFH801. The seventh in a series of eight Fashion Design Studio units in the Bachelor of Design (Honours) program, it forms the start of the capstone experience for an extended independently led fashion project. This unit builds upon the understandings acquired in the six preceding Fashion Design Studio units and also provides advanced fashion research skills to begin to formulate pathways to execute the self-defined independently-led fashion project. DEH701 Research Methods supports the content of this unit. The independently led fashion project will culminate in the final capstone studio unit, DFH801 Fashion Design Studio 8 (semester 2 - 36cp).

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Undertake advanced theoretical / industry / design research in response to a research or design problem.
  2. Investigate and generate creative solutions to design problems with independent practices / processes.
  3. Explore advanced fashion communication practices to develop a formative professional / design identity.
  4. Apply professional decision making, planning and organisational skills within the development of an extended independently-led project.

Content

This unit builds upon the understandings acquired in DFH601 Fashion Design Studio 6 and provides content such as:
• advanced fashion communication practices
• advanced theoretical / industry / design research skills
• advanced experimental garment construction and pattern making techniques
• professional decision making, planning and organisational skills in a fashion context.

Learning Approaches

This unit combines theory and practice in an integrated studio based environment. Lectures and masterclasses will cover the theory of fashion design and studio classes will provide practical experiences to appreciate the critical connection between design and fabrication. Opportunities are provided for class discussion and informal peer critique. Alongside this, support is given to hone skills in an open, constructive and creatively supportive environment. This unit encourages critical and constructive dialogue, problem solving, research, and exploration and questioning of traditional modes of fabrication, within a self-led capstone environment.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback in this unit is provided to you in the following ways:
• formative exercises discussed in class.
• comments on summative assessment work in addition to criteria sheets
• criteria sheet grading
• feedback from peers
• feedback from industry representatives

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
