Overview

In a globalised world, workplaces are increasingly filled with a diverse range of people from different nationalities, ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds. Diverse perspectives create more effective outcomes, yet can also cause misunderstanding, frustration, poor team performance, unintentional offense and lack of trust. This unit introduces Cultural Intelligence (CQ) – the ability to adapt, relate and work effectively with teams across cultures. In this unit students will develop an understanding of the key aspects of CQ by engaging with theoretical frameworks for interpreting differences in cultural behaviour in conjunction with developing skills which can help in responding appropriately and effectively to culturally diverse situations. This unit will be of value to students seeking global careers and those currently working in multicultural team environments.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Use the CQ personal profile to develop your cultural intelligence and compare your cultural values with those of others.
  2. Apply global cultural frameworks to plan for effective multicultural interactions and to navigate diverse cultural settings.
  3. Critically analyse real world culturally diverse situations and cases using a global mindset, and develop effective business recommendations.
  4. Reflect on your own cultural intelligence and adapt your behaviour in order to communicate and manage conflict effectively in culturally diverse contexts, and set goals for improving professional practice.

  • The CQ assessment tool – which evaluates effectiveness in diverse situations by measuring capabilities in four distinct areas:
    • CQ Motivation – to interact with people from culturally diverse environments;
    • CQ Knowledge – of the similarities and differences across cultures;
    • CQ Strategy – an ability to purposefully plan interactions and;
    • CQ Action – an ability to adapt and flex when interactions don’t go according to plan.

Learning Approaches

The unit is delivered via a weekly two-hour lecture and a fortnightly two-hour tutorial to inform, engage and promote awareness and improvement of CQ. Sessions will be interactive online and offline, and require prior reading and thinking about topics, issues and examples. Students will complete a cultural intelligence assessment at the commencement of the unit, and again at the completion of the unit. The research-based CQ assessment tool examines skills and capabilities and cultural value orientations against worldwide benchmarks and norms.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary
  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
  • Indirect: to the whole class

Students may be required to attend campus or an assessment centre for the purposes of assessment, regardless of the attendance mode for the unit.

Academic Integrity
