Overview
The rationale for this unit stems from the theoretical and practical dimensions of the relationship between employers and employees. The broad focus is on the employment relationship, the organisation of work and relevant management strategies. The unit also analyses the context of labour - management relations, particularly industrial relations institutions and labour markets. The unit will examine legislative, economic, political social and cultural perspectives on work and work organisations. The unit will explore socially responsible approaches in employment relations and the design of work and the inequalities of current structures.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Critically analyse the nature of work and workplace negotiations through evaluating theories, strategies and practices that are relevant to contemporary labour-management relations. [KS1.1, HO2.1]

Content
This unit develops and extends your understanding of the employment relations context, considering among other issues theories of employment relations, the role of institutions in employment relations, employee representation, bargaining structures and processes and inequalities in the labour market.

The unit is designed to introduce you to the theory and practice of employment relations. You are encouraged to relate the theories discussed to real-life examples and to take a critical approach to the material presented. You are asked to read the relevant chapter(s) of the text or other specified readings before each class each week to facilitate discussion.
Interactive class discussion groups incorporate information and application activities. Each week's lecture will be based around specific readings. Participative learning activities will explore application of the concepts. Videos and other media will be used, where appropriate. Lecture power point slides and supplementary readings will be made available on the MGN410 Canvas site. Information on assessment tasks and requirements are provided on the Canvas site.
This unit uses text authentication tools that assist students to develop the academic skills required to correctly use and cite reference material as well as to check citations and determine possible instances of plagiarism. You will be expected to submit draft and/or final versions of one or more assignments using these text authentication tools. Your Unit Coordinator will provide detailed information on how the software will be used in this unit.

You will write a 600 word (3 paragraph) essay and edit it using a GenAI tool. You will submit the original 600 words and the edited GenAI version with a 300 word reflection on using GenAI to edit your own work.

Assessment: Case Study
You will complete an analysis of the case study which will cover all aspects of the unit.

Overview
The rationale for this unit stems from the theoretical and practical dimensions of the relationship between employers and employees. The broad focus is on the employment relationship, the organisation of work and relevant management strategies. The unit also analyses the context of labour - management relations, particularly industrial relations institutions and labour markets. The unit will examine legislative, economic, political social and cultural perspectives on work and work organisations. The unit will explore socially responsible approaches in employment relations and the design of work and the inequalities of current structures.

This unit develops and extends your understanding of the employment relations context, considering among other issues theories of employment relations, the role of institutions in employment relations, employee representation, bargaining structures and processes and inequalities in the labour market.

Learning Approaches
The unit is designed to introduce you to the theory and practice of employment relations. You are encouraged to relate the theories discussed to real-life examples and to take a critical approach to the material presented. You are asked to read the relevant chapter(s) of the text or other specified readings before each class each week to facilitate discussion.
Interactive class discussion groups incorporate information and application activities. Each week's lecture will be based around specific readings. Participative learning activities will explore application of the concepts. Videos and other media will be used, where appropriate. Lecture power point slides and supplementary readings will be made available on the MGN410 Canvas site. Information on assessment tasks and requirements are provided on the Canvas site.
This unit uses text authentication tools that assist students to develop the academic skills required to correctly use and cite reference material as well as to check citations and determine possible instances of plagiarism. You will be expected to submit draft and/or final versions of one or more assignments using these text authentication tools.
