Overview
This unit introduces you to the frameworks that govern employment relationships and the practices needed to foster fair and compliant workplaces. You will explore the legal, political, social, economic and ethical factors impacting choices about employing people. You will learn about social responsibilities of employers and employees and how awards, agreements and legislation shape conditions of work. Through case studies, you will examine how organisations manage grievances, negotiate with stakeholders and build inclusive cultures while meeting regulatory requirements. The unit also considers the challenges posed by emerging technologies, new forms of work and global labour trends. Aligned with QUT’s Real World Learning vision, the unit equips you with the knowledge and skills to navigate workplace relations issues with professionalism and integrity.

Learning Approaches
The learning approach for this unit is based on a blended model with pre-recorded and interactive teaching activities. The purpose is to provide an outline of the main concepts, identify areas of discussion and debate, and to develop critical inquiry. Teaching activities in smaller groups will allow for discussions and practice based activities allow students to develop their abilities in applying theory to workplace situations, and to consider the broader implications of workplace decisions.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester, which may include:
- Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
- Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary
- Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation

Overview
You will complete two assessment items which are designed to assist you in developing your awareness of the legal, political, social, economic, financial and ethical factors impacting choices about employing people. The first assessment is an individual critical reflection where you research a non-standard employment arrangement coming to your own professional conclusions. The second is an in-depth report completed individually focusing on employment obligations and resultant recommendations.

Assessment: Critical Reflection
You will write a critical reflection on a contemporary workplace relations issue, drawing on legal frameworks, case law, ethical principles and personal perspectives. The reflection will demonstrate your ability to analyse the causes and consequences of the issue and to articulate your own stance in a structured, professional manner.

You will prepare a report for management that outlines the organisation’s legal obligations and strategic options in response to a complex workplace relations scenario. The report will require you to interpret relevant legislation and industrial instruments, evaluate risks and propose actions that balance compliance, ethical considerations and organisational goals. This assessment develops your legal reasoning, analytical and communication skills.

Learning Approaches
The learning approach for this unit is based on a blended model with pre-recorded and interactive teaching activities. The purpose is to provide an outline of the main concepts, identify areas of discussion and debate, and to develop critical inquiry. Teaching activities in smaller groups will allow for discussions and practice based activities allow students to develop their abilities in applying theory to workplace situations, and to consider the broader implications of workplace decisions.

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester, which may include:
- Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
- Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary

You will complete two assessment items which are designed to assist you in developing your awareness of the legal, political, social, economic, financial and ethical factors impacting choices about employing people. The first assessment is an individual critical reflection where you research a non-standard employment arrangement coming to your own professional conclusions. The second is an in-depth report completed individually focusing on employment obligations and resultant recommendations.

Overview
This unit introduces you to the frameworks that govern employment relationships and the practices needed to foster fair and compliant workplaces. You will explore the legal, political, social, economic and ethical factors impacting choices about employing people. You will learn about social responsibilities of employers and employees and how awards, agreements and legislation shape conditions of work. Through case studies, you will examine how organisations manage grievances, negotiate with stakeholders and build inclusive cultures while meeting regulatory requirements. The unit also considers the challenges posed by emerging technologies, new forms of work and global labour trends.
