Overview

Success in civil engineering construction projects is dependent on the selection of correct construction procedures matched with the correct equipment and ancillary temporary work. To do this, a construction engineer must have command of a range of options and the judgement to integrate these options for optimal outcomes for all stakeholders.

This unit covers the fundamentals of project execution and start up of civil engineering projects. The subjects to be covered will include: site investigation, survey, identification and provision of temporary facilities, selection of equipment, material management, methods of construction, environmental protection practices, workplace health and safety requirements. The emphasis of the content will be on heavy, civil engineering projects existing or relevant to Queensland with a focus on environmental concerns and safety.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

1. Identify the necessary elements of a construction engineering site to successfully execute civil engineering projects at a developed level
2. Explain the role of a construction engineer for successful project completion at a developed level
3. Design the temporary works needed to facilitate construction of the permanent work at a developed level
4. Analyse the interaction of the selected methods within the complex projects of construction engineering at a developed level

Learning Approaches
Interactive lectorials will introduce material with real examples and applications. All relevant sessions will be posted on the Canvas but this will not be sufficient for successful mastery of the unit. Team based exercises will enhance your capacity to learn from your peers and develop your negotiating skills. Lectorial interactions support the construction portfolio tasks you work on throughout the semester with practice quiz questions as feedback and exam preparation. Project work will develop your ability to apply theory and to authentic construction tasks.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will receive formative feedback on your progress in this unit during tutorials and discussions. You will receive timely written feedback on your assessment tasks in a timely manner consistent with QUT guidelines.

The assessment for this unit follows the assessment policy stated in section C/5.1 Manual of Policies and Procedures (MOPP).

Assessment: Examination (written)

Two hour examination

“If campus access is restricted at the time of the central examination period/due date, an alternative, which may be a timed online assessment, will be offered. Individual students whose circumstances prevent their attendance on campus will be provided with an alternative assessment approach.”

Assessment: Mid-Term Exam

One hour examination
Multiple choice questions only
During the tutorial hour

Assessment: Group Assignment

You will be required to develop a project execution plan for a small to medium size infrastructure project. Your will be required provide a progress report that will be assessed but not marked in Week 7. You will be provided formative feedback for the interim submission. The assignment is due in Week 13 and you will complete it individually or in small teams (up to 4 members).

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
