Overview
The purpose of this introductory unit is to provide you with awareness of why organisations exist; how they position and organise themselves with respect to their dynamic capabilities, task environment, and general environment; and what tools managers can use to gather and interpret information to inform strategic plans and decisions. By drawing on a range of real world and hypothetical cases, this unit provides you with a macro-level view of management, focusing on the technical systems side of management activities.

Learning Approaches
This unit examines core strategic management theories and exemplar cases to understand and explore the analysis and integration of critical assumptions and conditions to identify, diagnose, problem solve, and devise strategies.
A combination of lectures and tutorials will allow you to practice making strategic decisions and learning how to successfully assess and interpret strategy for real businesses.

These serve the purpose of introducing the key concepts of strategic management. By making them available online, it gives you the flexibility to learn at a time that maximises your learning.
Prescribed readings
Key concepts will be reinforced with key readings , with an aim to build on the online introductions and provide additional information and context.
Tutorials:
In a seminar style approach we will further explore the key concepts outlined in the readings and the online introductions and will start translating them into strategic action through cases. Your active participation and preparation is paramount to understanding the importance and impact of strategic decision making.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:
- Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
- Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary

Overview
The assessment in this unit aims to support your achievement of the learning objectives for both Discipline Knowledge and Other Graduate Capabilities. Assessment has been designed in order to allow you to:
- Receive feedback on your learning as you progress toward the development of knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes (formative assessment); and
- Demonstrate your learning in order to achieve a final grade (summative assessment).
Students may be required to attend campus or an assessment centre for the purposes of assessment, regardless of the attendance mode for the unit.

Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Environmental Scanning
Acting as a graduate consultant, you will analyse the external and internal environment of the organisation. To do this, you will identify the key success factors that are the major determinants of the financial and competitive success in the organisation's industry, and analyse the case organisation's resources and capabilities to identify its dynamic capabilities. You will present your draft analysis and recommendations to your mentor supervisor.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Dynamic Capabilities Assessment
Building on feedback from the first assessment and knowledge gained throughout your studies, you will form a team of consultants to consolidate your team's collective environmental scans and then outline strategic recommendations for the organise move forward harnessing their dynamic capabilities.
Your contributions to the team processes will be evaluated at an individual level based on the quality and frequency of your contributions. Your oral presentations skills will also be assessed at the individual level.

This unit examines core strategic management theories and exemplar cases to understand and explore the analysis and integration of critical assumptions and conditions to identify, diagnose, problem solve, and devise strategies.

Acting as a graduate consultant, you will analyse the external and internal environment of the organisation. To do this, you will identify the key success factors that are the major determinants of the financial and competitive success in the organisation's industry, and analyse the case organisation's resources and capabilities to identify its dynamic capabilities. You will present your draft analysis and recommendations to your mentor supervisor.
