Overview
This unit develops an appreciation of the conceptual, cultural and historical contexts of photo media, addressing visual literacy, critical artistic enquiry, and the protocols related to ethical photo media practice. Photo media, which involves the use of diverse photographic processes, plays an important role in contemporary creative practices because of its pervasiveness and its application across a broad range of cultural and conceptual contexts. Photo imaging may also be the predominant mode of specific artists within a broader multidisciplinary approach to practice. This unit introduces a diverse range of contemporary artistic photo imaging concepts and methods as part of a trajectory of photographic history. It provides the opportunity to experiment with a variety of approaches to understand and create engaging and informed photo image portfolios.

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Apply a range of techniques and experimental methods appropriate to artistic photo imaging.
- Explain and interpret critical and cultural approaches to contemporary and historical concepts in art photography.
- Independently formulate and produce creative portfolios that demonstrate iterative development through camera and process-based experimentation.
- Communicate the practical, conceptual and contextual aspects of your photo artwork.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the protocols around photo imaging that respect and recognise the rights and privacy of others.

This unit introduces you to significant photographic art concepts, genres and processes: digital image capture; digital camera operations; computer enhancement of digital photographs; contemporary Australian and international photography; key historical developments in photography and art; rights of representation as seen in Indigenous, feminist and other cultural histories; personal approaches to applying art concepts to individual photo image portfolios.
Learning Approaches
Practical workshops based on enquiry and peer-based learning are the central element of this unit. These workshops are introduced by a program of lectures and supplemented with online resources. Each practical workshop session acts as the foundation for your weekly independent creative work based on a set of genre-related tasks. The culminating project is a major independent project executed in the second half of the semester, which is developed and undertaken via meetings with your tutor and peers.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
You will be given formative feedback on your progress throughout the semester from teaching staff and through class discussions. In addition, general feedback will be posted to the class via your unit Canvas website. You will also receive individual feedback on assessable items via criterion referenced grading forms.

There are two assessments for this unit, designed to demonstrate your growing confidence and capabilities with photo media across a broad range of cultural and conceptual contexts. The assessments are a portfolio of work submitted by mid-semester, and a folio of creative work submitted at the end of semester.

You are required to submit a series of genre-related tasks presented in a mid-semester portfolio.
This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Independent project work and written rationale presented in an end of semester folio.

Students will need access to a camera or other device that takes photographs, such as high end phones, iPad, or digital camera and some form of editing software, either built into the device or available on a computer. Students who are not remote may request loans of DSLRs from the loan centre at Kelvin Grove.
To enable your full participation in the virtual learning environment, for example, participating in online activities and engaging with online learning materials, you will need access to a reliable computer with an internet connection, webcam, headset and microphone, as well as a learning environment where you are able to fully participate undisturbed when required.

This unit introduces you to significant photographic art concepts, genres and processes: digital image capture; digital camera operations; computer enhancement of digital photographs; contemporary Australian and international photography; key historical developments in photography and art; rights of representation as seen in Indigenous, feminist and other cultural histories; personal approaches to applying art concepts to individual photo image portfolios.
Learning Approaches
Practical workshops based on enquiry and peer-based learning are the central element of this unit. These workshops are introduced by a program of lectures and supplemented with online resources. Each practical workshop session acts as the foundation for your weekly independent creative work based on a set of genre-related tasks. The culminating project is a major independent project executed in the second half of the semester, which is developed and undertaken via meetings with your tutor and peers.

You will be given formative feedback on your progress throughout the semester from teaching staff and through class discussions. In addition, general feedback will be posted to the class via your unit Canvas website. You will also receive individual feedback on assessable items via criterion referenced grading forms.

There are two assessments for this unit, designed to demonstrate your growing confidence and capabilities with photo media across a broad range of cultural and conceptual contexts. The assessments are a portfolio of work submitted by mid-semester, and a folio of creative work submitted at the end of semester.

Students will need access to a camera or other device that takes photographs, such as high end phones, iPad, or digital camera and some form of editing software, either built into the device or available on a computer. Students who are not remote may request loans of DSLRs from the loan centre at Kelvin Grove.
To enable your full participation in the virtual learning environment, for example, participating in online activities and engaging with online learning materials, you will need access to a reliable computer with an internet connection, webcam, headset and microphone, as well as a learning environment where you are able to fully participate undisturbed when required.
