Overview

This unit will build your capacity to participate in development processes for education research projects. You will have opportunities for advanced learning about fundamental topics in education research and learning about aspects of research that become directly relevant in the period leading up to and following your Confirmation of Candidature. Unit content will be specified for projects in the complex and changing fields of education practice and research. Your assessment will give you the opportunity to deliver a presentation on your research proposal as you are developing it before or after Confirmation and with detailed consideration of Human Research Ethics. To build your skills in contributing to scholarly conversations and communities, you will provide constructive formative feedback on the presentations of some of your peers.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Using presentation software, prepare and deliver a detailed and persuasive proposal for a research project leading up to or after Confirmation of Candidature (CLO4, CLO5, CLO6, CLO8)
  2. Provide and respond to feedback on a detailed proposal for a research project leading up to or after Confirmation of Candidature (CLO4, CLO5)

Content

The unit will cover, but is not limited to, the following content areas:

  • Advanced knowledge about research proposals, focusing on the logic and coherence of the argument (from research questions to literature review and choices of theory, design and methods)
  • Knowledge about the contexts of Education research, including key issues in research in Education in Australia
  • Qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research designs used in Education
  • Human research ethics -- key considerations for researchers in Education including working ethically with and across social difference
  • Research project management -- planning for candidature processes from Confirmation to Completion
  • Authentic assessment tasks designed to develop transferable knowledge and skills for scholarly research, including delivery of oral presentations and provision of scholarly peer feedback

Learning Approaches

In this unit you will have opportunities to learn through activities that include but are not limited to:

  • A series of activities designed to scaffold the development of your research project and Confirmation and Human Research Ethics documents, while building transferable skills and knowledge about research processes and texts;
  • Mini-lectures and hands-on workshop activities to build research knowledge and skills;
  • Flipped classroom activities to enable you to build a deep understanding of unit readings;
  • Opportunities to give and receive formative feedback in a community of researchers;
  • Summative assessment on your presentation of the current state of your research project (before or after Confirmation); and
  • Information sessions on managing your higher degree research candidature.

The pedagogy leverages the educational and professional knowledge of your cohort to provide opportunities for learning from the diverse knowledge and expertise of others with education interests and experience.

The pedagogy will intentionally blend digital and other modes of learning. You will be able to select your preferred way of engaging with the content from the hybrid pedagogic approach.

You are required to attend one study school in the course of the unit: 4-day Study School 3 (January). You may choose to attend asynchronously online or in a hybrid synchronous mode.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

In this unit, formative and summative feedback will be available as follows:

  • Formative peer feedback will be encouraged during unit activities.
  • Formative self-assessment of the presentation you do for your assessment will be enabled.
  • Summative written feedback will be provided by the teaching team on the presentation you do for your assessment.

Assessment

Overview

There is one assessment task for this unit:

  • Deliver a presentation to a scholarly community on your research proposal before or after Confirmation

The assessment task is designed to enable you to demonstrate your ability to present your proposed research to an audience of researchers. The purposes of the assessment is for you to continue to develop your research project while acquiring essential research skills. The skills and knowledge about presenting proposed studies are transferable to scholarly research beyond your research project.

This assessment task is designed to enable you to demonstrate your ability to develop a research project, write a persuasive research proposal for the project, and present your proposal to an audience of researchers. The purpose of the assessment is for you to develop your research project while acquiring essential research skills. The skills and knowledge about research proposals and processes are transferable to scholarly research beyond your research project.

The use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is not permitted in this assessment task as you must demonstrate your own skills and knowledge. Ensure that all submitted work is your own and maintains academic integrity standards.

You may be asked to demonstrate authorship of your assessment.

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.

The Academic Integrity Policy sets out the range of conduct that can be a failure to maintain the standards of academic integrity. This includes, cheating in exams, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion and contract cheating. It also includes providing fraudulent or altered documentation in support of an academic concession application, for example an assignment extension or a deferred exam.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Breaching QUT’s Academic Integrity Policy or engaging in conduct that may defeat or compromise the purpose of assessment can lead to a finding of student misconduct (Code of Conduct – Student) and result in the imposition of penalties under the Management of Student Misconduct Policy, ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
