Overview

  • In the challenging environment of the contemporary health system, health professionals caring for the older person will be required to provide organisational leadership to ensure that services continue to evolve to meet the changing community needs and the changing service delivery challenges. Such leadership requires the acquisition of knowledge and the development of capabilities in leadership to address current and future challenges, and build strong, respectful and meaningful relationships with the older person, their families and multidisciplinary health care teams. As the capstone unit in the Master of Gerontology, this unit further develops your skills in addressing complex contemporary issues in health care and gerontology and challenges you to critically evaluate your leadership capabilities and philosophy to prepare you to lead and advocate for improved care of the older person.  

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Critically examine health leadership theories and apply to the context of Gerontology across diverse care settings.
  2. Critically reflect on your personal leadership philosophy and capabilities, and identify areas of self-improvement to meet the diverse, complex and interdisciplinary needs of the older person.
  3. Demonstrate the capacity to initiate and lead intra- and inter-disciplinary collaborations to advocate for practice change in the delivery of optimal outcomes across care settings for the older person and build productive relationships across diverse stakeholders.

Learning Approaches

In this fully online unit you will have the opportunity to learn through active engagement with the interactive learning resources, peer learning, moderated and facilitated online discussions, learning events and self-directed learning materials. This unit takes an interdisciplinary approach and encourages students to apply their learning to their speciality. Authentic learning activities assist students to consider the role that strong leadership plays in aged care through active online engagement with interdisciplinary, industry informed resources.  

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

  • Informal formative feedback will be provided through self-check exercises, peer feedback and through individual or whole of class feedback in online discussions or via comments in online communities. 
  • Formal written or recorded feedback will be received on both formative and summative assessment tasks via Turnitin or the Canvas Assignment tool, in addition to the grade on the Criterion Reference Assessment sheet. 
  • Feedback on your assessment task 1 will be received prior to the submission of your assessment task 2. 
  • Students are encouraged to seek and share feedback in their workplaces where appropriate 

Assessment

Overview

In this unit, there are two summative assessment tasks to submit. The first assessment task requires you to reflect on leadership theories to identify leadership approaches that promote safe and quality care of the older person in diverse care settings. This task is due in week 6. The second assessment involves a scenario where you have been shortlisted for a leadership role in an aged care service. You will complete a plan for your job application, respond to key selection criteria and respond to an interview question for the role. This task is due at the end of the teaching period in the QUT Online exam week.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Effective Leadership in Gerontology

In this assignment, you will perform research to investigate how good leadership in aged care affects organisational culture and performance. Using evidence from this research, you will write an essay that responds to a series of questions.

1. What are the attributes of management and leadership that best fit aged care services?

In your answer you should consider the effective management and leadership required for sound governance, strategic decision-making, staff engagement, a learning culture, respecting diversity, developing strong stakeholder relationships, organisational performance and good reputation.

2. What are the personal, organisational and systems barriers that leaders face in leading effectively in the aged care sector?

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Job application

In this assignment scenario you have been shortlisted for a leadership role for an aged care service. You will select one job from a list of simulated job advertisements and complete a plan for your job application, respond to key selection criteria and respond to an interview question for the role. You will  need to identify the key knowledge, skills, experience and leadership capabilities that the recruitment panel will be looking for in both written applications and in an interview. You will need to understand why these key capabilities are considered important to the role.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
