Overview

This forms the second semester of the Engineering Management capstone project. Engineering management approaches and tools will be used to solve problems that confront engineers. The tools were identified and the project framed in semester 1; and they are applied in this unit. The ability to frame an engineering management approach to an engineering problem, to collect and analyse data and present solutions is essential to professional practice. From a learning perspective, one of the most effective ways of achieving this is to investigate an authentic engineering problem that is relevant to the profession.

 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Implement appropriate engineering management approaches/tools to resolve the current engineering problem.
  2. Use specific management methodologies to collect, analyse and interpret data.
  3. Communicate and continually improve your management approach in response to data analysis and stakeholder feedback through progressive submission, feedback and response with your project supervisor.
  4. Work independently and collaboratively to collect and analyse data and feedback and find innovative management solutions to the current engineering problem.

Content

The content of this unit will include:

 

 

  • Lecture on data collection
  • Q&A/consultation with coordinator & management expert following progress report assessment.
  • Implementing authentic or novel management approaches or tool(s) for resolving the engineering problem.
  • Independent collection, analysis and interpretation of data and feedback.
  • Critical thinking and reflective practice.
  • Report writing skills development and assessment via a final report and presentation.
  • Regular meetings with supervisors.

Learning Approaches

Your learning in this unit will take place through an independent engineering management project with an individual supervisor/manager. The engineering management approach to resolving an engineering problem was identified in ENQ591-1 and now requires implementation. This includes data collection, analysis and inference and subsequent refining of the engineering management approach. Your supervised learning will be supported by individual interaction with your supervisor and the teaching team.

The project is to be an engineering management-based project with the findings contributing to the solution of an engineering problem.

The Canvas teaching site will be another forum for learning, interaction and collaboration.

Authentic learning, incorporating some aspects of work-integrated learning, informs the pedagogical approach in this unit. Associated learning approaches include problem/project based learning, experiential learning and reflective learning.

Note: ENQ591-1 and ENQ591-2 are components of the same project, but cannot be enrolled in the same semester. ENQ591-1 should be enrolled in the preceding semester to ENQ591-2.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Oral and written feedback will be provided by your individual supervisor/s during regular meetings throughout the semester. Feedback from relevant stakeholders as identified or negotiated as part of your project will also provide valuable feedback.

You may also receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

1. Rubrics provided to show the expected standard for each criteria in an assessment item.
2. Comments returned to you via Canvas.
3. Lecture / consultation sessions may be available for group and individual feedback prior to assessment due dates and on completion of assessments.
4. Generic comments provided via Canvas and in class.

Assessment

Overview

Assessment involves constructive and progressive feedback following key project management processes, criteria and standards. Your performance in the unit will be assessed through a portfolio of progressive work and professional reviews (with supervisor) and a final presentation and report. You will receive formative feedback on drafts of your final report to your supervisor for comment and rewriting prior to the date for final submission.

Assessment: Progress report

Progress report demonstrating progress in the engineering management project.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Final Report

Final Report
You will submit a comprehensive report outlining the problem, research method, critical literature and recommendations.

Reflections on meetings with the supervisor will be appended to the report.

Academic Integrity

Risk Assessment Statement

All commencing engineering students are required to complete the Mandatory Safety Induction.

There are no extraordinary risks associated with the activities in this unit.

If you undertake a project, either individually or in a group, you may in conjunction with your QUT project supervisor, be required to complete and submit a Risk Assessment of your project activities in MAPS (Management and Assessment of Project Safety) for approval.
