Overview
In the challenging environment of the contemporary health system, managers will be required to provide organisational leadership to ensure that services continue to evolve. They must evolve to meet the changing community needs and the changing service delivery challenges. Such leadership requires the acquisition of knowledge and the development of competencies in leadership, which may enable the future manager to address current and future challenges. This unit will provide you with the knowledge and competencies to cope with the complex and changing environment of healthcare delivery.
The aim of this unit is to apply knowledge of the key issues confronting health and critically inform strategic management.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Apply the principles and concepts of leadership to organisational governance and the systems and structures required to exact governance
- Apply the principles and concepts of quality management and continuous quality improvement
- Apply the principles and practice of policy development, planning and evaluation
- Critically evaluate organisational performance, including financial management, and reporting
- Analyse existing issues in cultural safety and their significance to health leadership
Learning Approaches
You will be engaged in an active learning environment, undertaking regular online activities, guided through the learning process by expert teaching staff who provide regular feedback. On average, you will need to dedicate 12-15 hours each week for your learning that includes readings, discussions with peers and assignments.

Assessment: Assignment 1: Essay
Why are trust and transparency important for the effective management and leadership of healthcare organisations? What are the personal, organisational and systems barriers leaders face in achieving these two attributes?
This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
Assessment: Assignment 2: Job application
In this assignment, you will imagine you have been shortlisted for a health leadership role. You will complete a plan for your job application, respond to key selection criteria and respond to an interview question for the role.
