Overview
This is a transitionary unit, providing students with fundamental information systems skills relating to different practices in managing information systems in big and small enterprises. Information systems and enterprises are becoming inextricably interwoven. It has become nearly impossible to talk meaningfully about enterprises that are not dependent on information systems of one type or another.
An important role of managers is to understand what type of information system they should use to achieve the business strategic objectives or to improve existing business capabilities. This unit provides students with fundamental skills that business analysts or IT managers are required to have in order to be able to analyse business strategies, evaluate how information systems may enable enterprises to achieve strategic objectives, and understand how such an information system can be developed and implemented within an enterprise. - Learn and develop skills to identify technical and socio-economic foundations of enterprise systems and explain their use in different corporate settings. (CLO1)

- Identify, address and present your team's interim analysis of the limitations and barriers of enterprise and engage in effective professional and scholarly communication. (CLO5)

Content
The unit will cover areas such as a general introduction to enterprise systems based in information technology, economics, and social sciences. We will touch upon these pillars by introducing you to fundamental information technology that is deployed as part of an information system as well as managerial and organizational foundations that go along with it. For example, the unit will introduce IT Strategic Analysis and Strategy Map, Digital Firms and Business Models, Systems building blocks such as principles of system acquisition, development, implementation and maintenance. Students will further learn fundamental of current technology trends such as could computing.
Learning Approaches
The unit comprises of a 90-minutes weekly lecture, supported by two-hours weekly tutorials. The content of this unit will be delivered using a blended learning approach of online and face-to-face studio sessions. You will engage in collaborative activities with peers, tutors and lecturers to identify, analyse, present and report on challenges and solutions to business IT systems. This unit engages you in your learning through a real-world case-based learning approach, where you will have the chance to apply the taught information systems skills while exploring business cases, emerging technologies, and challenges in deploying and using enterprise systems. We emphasise a real-life learning experiences where you can build up and deepen your enterprise information systems proficiency by contributing existing knowledge and experiences from your professional background in projects that form the assignments of this unit.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
You will gain a mix of oral and written feedback from peers and teachers on portfolio reports and reflections feedback in this unit by participating in weekly tutorials. You will also receive written feedback on your initial review and proposal for Assessment 1, as well as oral and written feedback on your written critique for Assessment 2 and Assessment 3 which will directly relate to and inform your final assessment.

Assessment: Solution Proposal
The encompassing idea of this assignment is to propose a strategy to solve a problem in an organisation (the “selected organisation”). In this assignment your group will select an organisation and will come up with an idea for an information system to address that problem and propose strategy how you will address the identified problem/s. Optionally, the strategy could be implemented in more than just your selected organisation. By completing this assignment, you will develop your understanding of how organisations can design strategies and plan for corporate systems to address problems in small and large organisations. The format of the assessment will help you advance your skills in report writing and teamwork.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Request for Proposal
The objective for this assignment is to build upon your earlier group assignment (#1). Specifically, you will develop a request for proposal to invite vendors to develop information system/s to address the problem/s you have identified in your previous assignment (#1). You will be required to explain the requirements and details of the information system/s that could address the problem you have identified. Use the feedback on your previous assignment, to help you improve your overall request for proposal for applicable information system/s.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Case Study
The encompassing idea of this assignment is to analyse a given case study and to present a logical and factual account of strengths and weakness of the organization. You will assess the alternatives, the risk and potential options and will explain which alternative the company should select to achieve its objectives. Then, you will define the implementation plan and will explain how you would manage changes and potential risks.

The unit will be taught on QUT premises. As part of the assignments or when offered by a lecturer or tutor, students may perform field trips to external organisations, such as commercial or industrial premises. When you visit such premises, you are responsible for acquainting yourself with any Health and Safety policies and procedures applicable to visitors (e.g. wearing of protective clothing such as hard hats, safety glasses, etc), and for observing those procedures. You are also responsible for notifying workplace supervisors of any health condition you have (e.g. asthma) which may place you at risk in some commercial or industrial situations.
