Overview

By undertaking a scholarly piece of work (quality improvement project), the project units of HLQ638-1 and HLQ638-2 give you the opportunity to consolidate, extend and apply the research skills that you have gained to date in an area that is relevant to your field of study. Quality improvement is especially important in the healthcare setting, and the development of evidence-based quality and safety systems ensures consumers safety.  The project units will centre on development of a quality improvement work-based project you will implement in your healthcare facility.  You will develop the skills to research, plan and implement a real world project and disseminate the findings. These units will span two QUT Online teaching periods. 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate a clinical question to inform evidence-based practice.
  2. Apply knowledge of the principles of ethically sound practice in the planning and implementation of a quality improvement project in your clinical area.
  3. Interpret and disseminate your project outcomes in accordance with accepted standards of scholarship, presentation and style for your profession

Content

Week 1 will provide a module on quality improvement projects.  HLQ707 (prerequisite) will be referred to for content as required.  Activities each week will assist you in meeting the unit requirements.

Learning Approaches

In this fully online unit you will be working autonomously to develop and complete a quality improvement project to inform evidence-based practice. You will have the opportunity to seek feedback from your online learning advisor and your allocated project supervisor. 

 

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

  • Informal formative feedback will be provided through self-check exercises, peer feedback and through individual or whole of class feedback in online discussions or via comments in online communities.
  • Formal written or recorded feedback will be received on both formative and summative assessment tasks via Turnitin or the Canvas Assignment tool, in addition to the grade on the Criterion Reference Assessment sheet.
  • Supervisor feedback will be provided at timely intervals to guide learning and assessment
  • Students are encouraged to seek and share feedback in their workplaces where appropriate

Assessment

Overview

In this unit, there are two summative assessment tasks to submit. The marks for these assessment tasks will be combined with the mark for the final report (HLQ638-2) and will inform your overall grade. The first assessment task involves presenting an oral report of your quality improvement project (week 4) and an interim report (assessment 2) is due in week 8.  This report will continue to be built on in HLQ638-2.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Oral presentation

You are required to present the findings of your research or professional project to your online learning group, as well as the unit co-ordinator, your Project Supervisor, and to your industry client, if relevant. This presentation will be delivered live in a virtual environment.

Assessment: Interim Report

You are required to produce a professionally presented and comprehensive interim project report. This comprehensive interim report will include materials appropriate for your specific project as approved by your Project Supervisor and represents an interim report for your final capstone project.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
