Overview

In this unit, you will consider career development theory, practice, policy and research. Career development is a broad and constantly evolving field which is relevant to all individuals. Recent developments in education and employment highlight the importance for all educators and related career practitioners to be equipped to effectively prepare people for a rapidly changing world of work. You will explore the multifaceted landscape of career development, examining its theoretical foundations, practical applications, policy implications, diversity and ethics in the ever-evolving world of work. As you progress through this unit, you will develop critical thinking skills to analyse career development challenges, create innovative solutions, and adapt to the changing needs of diverse client populations.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Synthesise theories and scholarly literature to evaluate changes in the world of work and the impact of these changes on career development theories.
  2. Reflect on personal career development using the Systems Theory Framework to improve professional knowledge and evaluate career decision making processes.
  3. Using the Systems Theory Framework, evaluate influences which may be operating on the career decision making processes of those with alternate career journeys.
  4. Analyse the ethical challenges in career development practice when providing support to members of diverse client populations.
  5. Reflect on your own professional competencies to identify ways to improve professional practice.
  6. Source, evaluate and apply labour market information and resources to design evidence-based career interventions for diverse client populations.

This unit will cover the following:

  • The changing world of work and labour market trends
  • Labour market information; sourcing, analysing and applying LMI in career practice
  • Key career theories with a focus on the Systems Theory Framework
  • Australian career development initiatives and policies and their impact on individuals and society
  • Ethical practice with diverse client populations
  • Digital resources and technology in career development
  • Service ecosystems; career development services, stakeholders and referral pathways
  • Artificial intelligence for career practitioners
  • Professional competency development and reflective practice

Assessment

Overview

There are two assessments in this unit:

  1. Career reflection – this task connects concepts covered in this unit to facilitate an evaluation of and reflection on changes in the world of work and career development theories, personal career influences and influences which may operate on those with alternate career journeys.
  2. Labour Market Portfolio - this task connects concepts covered in this unit to facilitate the development of a labour market information portfolio to support clients from a specific demographic group.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Career Development: Theory, Policy and Reflective Practice

In this assignment, you will evaluate changes in the world of work, the evolution of career development theory, and the Australian career development policy landscape. You will apply the Systems Theory Framework to reflect on your own career journey and consider how this framework can support your professional practice with clients.

GenAI prohibited: The use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is prohibited during this assessment.

Assessment: Labour Market Intelligence Portfolio

In this assignment, you will develop a professional portfolio demonstrating your capability to use artificial intelligence tools and labour market intelligence to support clients from a specific demographic group experiencing career uncertainty. You will use GenAI throughout this assignment to research labour market trends, identify resources and services, and develop client support approaches. Your portfolio will demonstrate both your technical skills in prompting and using AI for labour market research, and your critical evaluation of AI outputs to ensure ethical, accurate, and culturally responsive practice.

GenAI allowed: The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.

Academic Integrity
