Overview

This is a core unit in the Graduate Diploma and Master of Health Management programs. The unit explores the principles and practice of management in health to inform your role as a health manager. The unit focuses on core health management activities: organisational management; strategic management; resource management including financial and human resource management; information management; project management and change management. The focus of this unit is on the development of the analytical, evaluative and operational skills required by health managers who must work in complex systems and organisations characterised by constant change.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Discuss organisational aspects of health services and the impact these have on performance.
  2. Apply the principles of financial management and human resource management in the contemporary health context.
  3. Discuss resource allocation methods and their application.
  4. Apply information and knowledge management principles to digitally enabled healthcare environments.
  5. Critically analyse organisational culture to inform change management drawing on scholarly and professional literature.

Content

This unit will cover theoretical principles that underlie organisational behaviour and the systems, structure and processes that characterise modern health services. It will also cover the following operational aspects of health management:

  • Approaches to sustainable operational health management
  • Financial management
  • Human Resource management
  • Project management
  • Information and knowledge management
  • Entrepreneurial approaches to solving operational health management issues

Learning Approaches

In this unit, you will learn by engaging in an active learning environment, undertaking regular online activities, guided through the learning process by expert teaching staff who provide regular feedback. On average, you will need to dedicate 12-15 hours each week for your learning that includes readings, discussions with peers and assignments.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will receive feedback on your learning in a variety of ways, including:

  • Informal formative feedback will be provided via quizzes, self-assessment tools, peer feedback and through individual or whole of class feedback, the debriefing of learning activities or via comments in online communities.
  • Formal written or recorded feedback will be received on both formative and summative assessment tasks, in addition to the grade on the Criterion Reference Assessment sheet.

Feedback on your formative assessment task will be received prior to the submission of your summative assessment task.

Assessment

Overview

There are two assessments in this unit.

1. Responses to prompts: This assessment will consolidate core knowledge regarding the fundamentals of contemporary health management.

2. Case Study: This realistic assessment will provide an opportunity to apply understanding of operational management and digital health to develop a recommendation, and implementation and evaluation plans for a given healthcare scenario.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Response to prompts

Drawing on the content provided in modules 1-4, you will provide a written response to four prompts (approximately 500 words per prompt).  Your response will be supported by appropriate citation and referencing. 

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Assessment: Case Study

You will take on the role of a health manager to undertake a critical analysis of management practices in a given healthcare scenario. You will need to apply entrepreneurial approaches to addressing a digital technology issue that has arisen in a given scenario. Drawing on relevant literature to support your analysis, you will develop a recommendation, implementation plan and suggested evaluation strategies for the healthcare setting's leadership group.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
