Overview

This unit introduces project management as a dynamic profession that plays a pivotal role in effectively planning, organising, and executing tasks to achieve specific goals within a defined timeframe and budget. The ability to manage projects efficiently has become a crucial skill for organisations and individuals alike. This unit focusses on project management essentials - the Project Management Institute project domains, amongst others - which encompass a range of principles, methodologies, and tools that empower project managers to navigate complexity, mitigate risks, and deliver successful project outcomes. The unit serves as a gateway into the fundamental concepts of project management, exploring key areas such as project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control, and project closure. By mastering these essentials, you will enhance your ability to drive innovation, enhance collaboration, and achieve consistent project success in diverse industries and sectors.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Discuss and reflect on the role of project managers in leading the delivery of projects across different sectors.
  2. Investigate and pitch innovative project management methodologies, tools and techniques to clients
  3. Plan ways to effectively manage project teams in the development of project execution plans.
  4. Select and justify appropriate tools and techniques, including the project management body of knowledge, for the delivery of projects across the project lifecycle.
  5. Design governance strategies to facilitate risk-aware and culturally sensitive decision-making including consideration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives

Content

The content in this unit includes:

  • Strategic importance of projects.
  • The role of project managers, including client engagement and project governance structures.
  • Project management principles.
  • Project organisational structures.
  • Project life-cycles.
  • Project performance domains (stakeholder, team performance, development approach and life-cycle performance, planning performance, project work performance, delivery performance, measurement performance, uncertainty performance).
  • Waterfall, Agile, and other methods and artifacts commonly used in project management.
  • Introduction to portfolio and program management.
  • Effective management of project teams.

This unit will be delivered fully online. In this unit, you will learn by engaging in active and reflective learning through:

  • reading book chapters, scholarly and industry articles

Assessment

Overview

There are three assessments in this unit:

  1. Project Management Proposal – this will develop your understanding of the role of project management and the project manager with particular regard to engaging with clients on project proposal, scoping and initiation.
  2. Reflection – you will explore and reflect on the role of the project manager with consideration of the traits, tools and techniques that are common to projects of any project sector and those that are unique or different across sectors.
  3. Project Execution Strategy – you will develop your understanding and skills of the methodologies, tool and techniques available to project managers in the delivery of projects. This will be done through the development of a project execution plan.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Project Management Proposal

Working in small groups, you will take on the role of a project manager and produce a proposal for an indigenous client outlining your recommended course of action for the delivery of their project. Your team will identify your unique value proposition that provides you with a competitive advantage over other project managers trying to engage with the same client. The proposal will encompass, as a minimum, a project scope statement, project organisation structure, indigenous and other stakeholder engagement strategies, planned response to the unique indigenous aspects of the project, and the essential plan elements of cost, time and performance management.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Assessment: Reflection

You will compare and contrast the changing role of project managers across a range of sectors. Reflect on your suitability for roles in these sectors to identify your strengths and areas in which you require further development. Propose professional development activities you could undertake.

Assessment: Project Execution Strategy

You will take on the role of a project manager developing the project execution strategy to ensure that the project is successfully delivered within scope, on time and within budget. Your project will reflect the Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Body of Knowledge project domains.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
