Unit Outline: Session 1 2023, QUT Online, Online

Unit code:EUQ648
Credit points:12
Disclaimer - Offer of some units is subject to viability, and information in these Unit Outlines is subject to change prior to commencement of the teaching period.

Overview

In this unit, learning theory will be reviewed with a focus on understanding how theory informs the design and development of adult learning. You will review strategies and technologies that are used to engage learners and evaluate frameworks for learning design. You will collaboratively engage in a learning community with peers and facilitators to consider, explore, reflect and design appropriate learning environments.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate advanced understanding of learning theory particularly in relation to adult learning and teaching. (CLO 1.1, 1.2, 2.1)
  2. Design an accessible learning activity that is underpinned by androgical and pedagogical design principles (CLO 2.2, 2.4)
  3. Critically reflect on engagement and communication in learning environments (CLO 2.1, 2.2)
  4. Critically contribute to discussions and demonstrate responsible, professional and ethical behaviour. (CLO 2.3, 3.1)

Content

This unit will explore the following areas:

  • Learning theory
  • Adult learning
  • Instructional design principles
  • Learning design frameworks
  • Accessibility
  • Reflective practice
  • Communities of practice
  • Inquiry based learning
  • Online learning environments
  • Culture and effective online learning environments
  • Collaboration and communication online.

Learning Approaches

In this unit you will learn by engaging in active and reflective learning through participation with an emphasis on reflection on practice. Combining collaborative interaction and independent study, you will think critically and creatively about learning theory and how it underpins learning design, particularly in relation to adult learning and cultural impact. You will consider how these concepts underpin online learning and learning design. Assessment will build on theoretical understandings and professional practice through critique and construction of digital content. The unit will draw upon your professional experience in addition to set readings and multimodal resource materials.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will gain feedback in this unit by participating in regular online discussion and collaborative learning activities with peers and the teaching team. You will receive feedback on your contributions which will directly relate to and inform both pieces of assessment. Assessment will receive criteria-based grading and comments and the criteria will be considered by the cohort prior to assessment submission.

Formative Assessment in this unit will include an exercise to prepare for reflective writing (Assessment 1) and a peer and tutor led activity to evaluate planned learning activities (Assessment 2).

Assessment

Overview

Assessment in this unit enables you to extend your knowledge and experience of adult learning and apply this knowledge in a practical way.

Assessment 1 builds upon your contribution to collaborative activities and the feedback that you give and receive from peers.

Assessment 2 enables you to apply theory to practice in an authentic task.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Evaluation of Learning Theory

  1. Summarise two learning theories; and
  2. Critically evaluate the learning theories in relation to learning; and
  3. Select two posts from peers and offer constructive critical feedback.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Weight: 40
Length: 2 evaluations (500 words each) plus 2 critical reflections on peer work (250 words each), total 1500 words.
Individual/Group: Individual
Due (indicative): Week 5
Related Unit learning outcomes: 1, 4

Assessment: Learning Design

Design and develop an inquiry-based learning activity for an adult learning group that uses collaborative tools for groups to co-construct knowledge.

Create a template that maps out your learning activity, a critical evaluation of the design and a reflection on how learners engage and communicate in an online learning environment.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.

The Academic Integrity Policy sets out the range of conduct that can be a failure to maintain the standards of academic integrity. This includes, cheating in exams, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion and contract cheating. It also includes providing fraudulent or altered documentation in support of an academic concession application, for example an assignment extension or a deferred exam.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Breaching QUT’s Academic Integrity Policy or engaging in conduct that may defeat or compromise the purpose of assessment can lead to a finding of student misconduct (Code of Conduct – Student) and result in the imposition of penalties under the Management of Student Misconduct Policy, ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
