Overview

Whether we are presenting a creative, experimental project, a scientific discovery, or business opportunity, pitching is a valuable, life-long skill that we typically learn through trial and error. Brilliant ideas don’t sell themselves. To survive and thrive in this globalised and competitive market, it’s vital to be able to communicate our ideas concisely, creatively, and persuasively to diverse audiences and gain their support. In this unit you will learn how to develop and deliver a pitch that inspires diverse audiences and leaves a lasting positive impression. Researching topics that have personal and real-world significance, you will be guided by the teaching team and learn how to concisely and confidently communicate your ideas in innovative and compelling ways. The knowledge and skills developed in this unit have application across academic and professional contexts.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply evidence-based theories of communication and persuasion to analyse, research and respond to real world briefs or challenges.
  2. Use verbal and visual forms of communication to effectively and creatively engage with intended audiences.

Content

In this unit, you will work across disciplines to develop, compose, and deliver a pitch to diverse target audiences. You will analyse and research a topic you are passionate about -  chosen from a range of briefs or scenarios (e.g. health and wellbeing, sustainability, environmentalism etc.) - to understand your context and audience. You will learn how to identify the most suitable communication style and strategies to creatively and persuasively present your ideas to your target audience. At the end of the unit, you will present a live pitch to a panel of professionals.

Topics included in the unit include:

  • Unpacking the key elements of a good pitch
  • Identifying and understanding your different target audiences
  • Best practice communication styles and strategies
  • The power of rhetoric
  • Emotions and persuasive communication

Learning Approaches

This unit will provide you with regular opportunities to practice your pitching in a safe and supportive environment, building slowly from small to eventually large group presentations. You will work in small groups within your synchronous tutorials to build your confidence and skills, as well as to gain regular constructive feedback. Discussions will be facilitated to promote a safe space for sharing, reflecting and learning. You will also engage with online videos and activities to learn about the theory behind an effective pitch and to better evaluate your brief or scenario.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will gain regular formative feedback in this unit by participating in weekly tutorials and group crits with your peers and teaching staff. You will also be encouraged to learn how to give and receive constructive feedback, which will help you evaluate your own presentations as well as the presentations of others. You will receive written feedback on your summative assessment.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
