Overview

This unit will cover transitions and the research, practices and processes underpinning effective transitions across the early years and as fundamental for successful lifelong outcomes. The learning in this unit will focus on the importance of knowing and building on children's funds of knowledge, working collaboratively with families and other professionals, and supporting successful transitions at various stages across a child’s early childhood education and care experiences.  You will build your knowledge and practical strategies to support children's sense of belonging and their skills and confidence to navigate change. The unit addresses the importance of continuity for children’s learning journeys and effective communication with all stakeholders as key to smooth and successful transitions.

 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Justify transition plans for children drawing on recent literature, theory, policy and evidence-based research on transitions and continuity of learning for children birth to five years.
  2. Create transition plans for children in early childhood settings.
  3. Collaborate with parents/carers applying a culturally safe and strengths-based perspective to plan transitions.

Content

This unit will cover the following:

  • What are transitions and continuity of learning? (Incl: developing brain architecture; transition as a social process; NQS; EYLF; QKLG; AERO; BeYou)
  • The role of children and families in transitions
  • The importance of knowing and building on children's funds of knowledge
  • What makes effective transitions? (Sense of belonging; cultural identities valued; celebrating diversity; building on current success; success-oriented)
  • Stakeholder perspectives and collaborative partnerships (clarifying roles and responsibilities; listening; reflexivity)
  • Support services and specific programs (situational rather than blanket approaches)

Learning Approaches

In this unit, you will learn by engaging in active and reflective learning. Learning activities are designed to draw upon your professional experience and prior learning.

A range of teaching and learning experiences will be used including:

  • professional readings
  • video and/or audio recordings
  • online interactives and activities.

Overview

There is one assessment task in this unit:

1. Transition plan - this task connects your learning about transitions and continuity of learning to planning with a parent/carer for the transition to take place.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Transition plan

You will role play yourself collaborating with a parent/carer to create a transition plan for a child to move from one context to another. Apply an inclusive and culturally safe approach to guide the transition process. Utilise your knowledge from scholarly sources on what makes a successful transition and consider the individual child’s context to articulate what provisions will be made to meet the needs of the child, family and setting. Your resulting transition plan will be presented in written form with an accompanying justification.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
