Overview
This unit will equip you with essential knowledge and skills to harness technology and data analysis in sports science. It integrates the evaluation of sports technologies with practical data handling techniques, enabling you to analyse performance data critically and derive actionable insights. Emphasis is placed on data management, ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of sports data, and adhering to data privacy and ethical standards. Understanding how to effectively communicate these insights through reports and visualisations is crucial for sports professionals. You will engage with the unit content through various activities, including case studies and hands-on projects, fostering a comprehensive understanding of how technology can enhance athletic performance and decision-making. Mastery of these concepts is vital for aspiring sports scientists, preparing you to navigate the increasingly data-driven landscape of sports performance and management.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Critically assess how various sports technologies can enhance service users' decision-making processes, focusing on maximising performance and strategic outcomes
- Apply data handling techniques to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of sports data, including identifying and managing outliers and adherence to ethical data and privacy considerations and regulations
- Use statistical methods to analyse performance data and formulate actionable insights for sports improvement
- Develop and present comprehensive reports and visualisations that effectively communicate data insights to diverse service users, including coaches, athletes, and multidisciplinary teams
Content
The topics covered in this unit are designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of how sports technology and data analytics can enhance athletic performance and inform decision-making in sports settings. Major topics include:
- Evaluation of sports technologies and their value propositions
- Data handling and protection regulations
- Analysis of performance data
- Data visualisation and communication
Learning Approaches
The unit adopts a blended learning approach, combining interactive face to face workshops and digitally enabled learning experiences. The blended learning approach enables flexible engagement with digitally enabled content and learning activities. On-campus workshops are key opportunities to apply and deepen your learning through collaborative, integrative, and inquiry-based learning. Activities are scaffolded to prepare you for assessment and gain formative feedback from your teaching staff and peers on your progress. It offers an opportunity to connect with peers and broaden your professional networks.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Feedback in this unit may be provided in the following ways:
- Verbal and/or written feedback on each piece of formative and summative assessment during the semester
- Criteria sheet grading
- Comments, including peer feedback on group work, on summative assessment
- Generic comments back to the cohort via QUT Canvas
You are encouraged to communicate with the unit coordinator or unit tutor if you have any questions or concerns about the assessment items.
Assessment
Overview
The assessments in this unit measure your analytical capabilities, communication skills, and practical data handling, ensuring you are well-prepared for the demands of a sports scientist.
To support these summative assessments, formative activities such as workshops covering pitches and database design will provide you with essential feedback and hands-on experience, enhancing your readiness for real-world applications.
Unit Grading Scheme
7- point scale
Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Sports Technology Evaluation
In this assessment, you will critically analyse a specific sports technology and its influence on performance. You will submit a formal report targeted at a sports management audience and then deliver a three-minute in-person pitch aimed at a coach or practitioner. Verification of learning will also be done through questioning after the pitch. This task will develop your ability to critically evaluate technologies and communicate practical insights effectively, preparing you for real-world decision-making in sports environments.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details page for specific guidelines.
Assessment: Performance Analytics Database
You will design and implement a database for storing and analysing sports performance data. Your database will incorporate data visualisation and reporting functions, enabling effective translation and communication of insights. By engaging in this task, you will develop practical skills in ethical data handling and confidentiality, analysis and reporting, ensuring accuracy and integrity while preparing you for the demands of sports science practice.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details page for specific guidelines.
Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.
The Academic Integrity Policy sets out the range of conduct that can be a failure to maintain the standards of academic integrity. This includes, cheating in exams, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion and contract cheating. It also includes providing fraudulent or altered documentation in support of an academic concession application, for example an assignment extension or a deferred exam.
You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.
Breaching QUT’s Academic Integrity Policy or engaging in conduct that may defeat or compromise the purpose of assessment can lead to a finding of student misconduct (Code of Conduct – Student) and result in the imposition of penalties under the Management of Student Misconduct Policy, ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
Resources
There is no set text for this unit due to the multidisciplinary nature of the course.
Readings are provided via QUT Readings.
Risk Assessment Statement
You are required to read the Health and Safety Rules for School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences Laboratories and Clinics prior to undertaking any of the practicals for this unit. These Health and Safety Rules are provided in electronic form on the online teaching site for this unit and are prominently displayed in hardcopy within the laboratory/clinic. The tutorial components of this unit are practical and involve physical activity that may present some possible risk of injury or complication. You will be required to complete a pre-participation medical screening questionnaire
