Overview

This unit is a clinical skills unit that develops the key clinical and practical skills required for exercise physiology practice. Specifically, the unit teaches and assesses core skill competencies to conduct an effective client consultation including health and fitness assessment, analysis of results to inform the development of evidence based exercise programs which meet the client's needs and goals, and professional communication skills. Also included are skills based on delivering effective client education to assist with chronic disease or injury rehabilitation management. The skills developed in this unit link to the disease states covered in XNB380 and XNB381.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Develop the technical skills to conduct client consultations
  2. Conduct accurate and appropriate client health and fitness assessment protocols
  3. Develop the clinical reasoning skills to screen clients, select, design or modify exercise and functional capacity assessment protocols and interpret the results to the client and allied health professionals

Content

Development and performance of clinical skills relating to:

  • Pre-Client screening, risk stratification and contraindications
  • Client consultation, medical history, treatment, side effects, physical activity history, client goals
  • Client education around lifestyle and management of their condition
  • Exercise Assessment skills:, cardiorespiratory fitness, strength and balance
  • Design and then analyse, interpret and apply assessment protocols and methodologies appropriate to the client and situation for acute, sub-acute and chronic disease and injury management, workplace health and rehabilitation and other clinical exercise services

Learning Approaches

This unit adopts an applied approach to learning, where you will have online material to learn the theory of the professional skills and tutorials where you will have an opportunity to develop and practise the skill. Additional skill competency consolidation time will also be provided as required.

The approaches to teaching and learning in this unit are case scenarios, problem based learning, patient consultation and then development of the management plan, incorporating real world learning experiences.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback on your performance in assessment tasks will be provided through verbal feedback in class and written feedback on an individual basis or group basis as required for each assessment.

Overview

This unit will be delivered across a 13 week semester. Assessment items are designed to measure your knowledge and mastery of professional skills stated in the learning outcomes.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Demonstration

Patient consultation and management plan - You are required to capture a patient consultation around a common chronic disease and plan an effective management plan that includes client risk management, health and fitness assessment and risk mitigation. The patient consultation is to be presented digitally and will be assessed for professional communication skills (client rapport, active listening, open and closed questions, empathy). You must then develop a patient management strategy to address the needs and goals of the client. Multi-discipline teams should be incorporated if appropriate.

Assessment: Examination (practical)

Practical Examination - You will be assessed on your practical competencies to perform a client screening and health and fitness assessment for chronic disease management.  Duration 45 minutes

Assessment: Workbook

A workbook compiling theoretical knowledge gained throughout the unit. The workbook will include a number of tasks and research questions designed to assess students knowledge and critical thinking.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
