Overview
Exercise Physiologists need the skills and knowledge to operate within or apply entrepreneur skills to develop a new business. The unit will give a fundamental overview of the critical areas involved in starting, running or managing an exercise physiology practice, with a particular focus on inter-disciplinary approaches to business ideas that service the multi-faceted needs of chronic diseased populations. The unit identifies the legal, ethical, and professional frameworks that guide practice. This unit is in the final year of your course and integrates with your clinical placements.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Apply the principles of innovation and entrepreneurship and basic business operations to develop an innovative exercise physiology business idea, program, or service, with a focus on inter-professional practice.
- Reflect on professional and personal attributes, skills, experience, and knowledge that have been gained across the degree and apply this reflection to employability frameworks and early career development skills.
- Describe the Australian fair work and compensable scheme principles and regulations and evaluate as they relate to operating and working as a clinical exercise physiologist.

- Allied Health Marketing - client recruitment, GP recruitment & referrals, social media, ways to grow a business, online business opportunities
- SWOT Analysis
- Successful business case studies
- What can we learn from failed business opportunities
Module 2: Career Readiness
- Development of a curriculum vitae
- Effectively responding to selection criteria to demonstrate your personal employability in both written and oral formats.
- Human Resources - leave, superannuation, transition and employment rights.
- Contract Negotiation - How to negotiate your employment contract and understanding the contract contents against legal, ethical and moral principles.
- Early Career Success - identifying and aligning with an experienced mentor to help you establish career goals, expectations and personal performance feedback.

The unit will be delivered intensively. Lectures are presented online with workshops and tutorials held on-campus.

Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Business Concept Proposal
Business Concept Proposal - Oral and Written Presentation: You will be required to develop an idea for a clinical exercise physiology practice that demonstrates your understanding of the key considerations involved in starting a business. A key element of the business concept proposal is to address a chronic disease or health need and where appropriate, take a multi-disciplined approach to patient management. You will be required to demonstrate your business model, marketing, avenues of financial income, applicable legislation and business forecast.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Career Development Portfolio
You will be required to develop an industry applicable employment portfolio. The portfolio will comprise of a cover letter, curriculum vitae (CV), a mock interview, contract evaluation and mentorship agreement. To accommodate the diversity in student backgrounds and paths a range of different hypothetical jobs will be provided. In the cover letter, CV, mock interview, and mentorship agreement you are required to reflect on your professional and personal attributes that you have gained across your education and life. You will then apply that reflection to each of the five elements in the form of a traditional employment portfolio. You are required to source an appropriate mentor that aligns with your goals and future professional pursuits. The mentor agreement is designed to demonstrate your commit to future learning, self-development and building professional networks. Finally, you will be presented with a mock employment contract. In this contract you will be required to evaluate Australian fair work and compensable scheme principles and regulations.

Academic Integrity
