Overview
A key aspect of exercise and sport science is the role psychology plays in optimising performance levels. This unit explores the application of psychological principles underpinning sports performance and the common tasks and decision-making processes involved in the work of an exercise and sport psychologist. This unit builds upon the foundational first-year unit, XNB175 Exercise and Sport Psychology.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Describe psychological variables and how they influence exercise and sport performance
- Critically analyse and reflect upon exercise and sports psychology case studies
- Design and communicate an evidence-based psychological intervention for improving exercise and sport performance
- Apply essential psychological concepts and principles to problem-solving tasks while practicing cultural safety and inclusivity in group work
Content
The topics covered in this unit have been developed to advance your understanding and application of psychological concepts in an exercise and sport context. Major topics include:
- Counselling and building relationships with athletes
- Ethical practice
- Assessment in sports and exercise psychology
- Therapeutic models to assist athletes with athletic performance
- Individual and Team-related issues in sport and exercise
- Enhancing performance through mental skills training
Learning Approaches
The unit adopts a blended-learning approach. Specific online content delivery will come in the form of weekly vodcasts and recorded lectures. An online community will also be established and will include a bulletin board of weekly questions, blogs, and an online resource share. Weekly face-to-face tutorials will also be conducted where you will engage in collaborative activity with peers and tutors.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Assessment will be spaced throughout the semester to provide the opportunity for feedback on your learning to that point. Feedback in this unit is provided to you in the following ways:
- Verbal and/or written feedback on each piece of formative and summative assessment during the semester
- Criteria sheet grading
- Comments, including peer feedback on group work, on summative assessment
- Generic comments back to the cohort via QUT Canvas

Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Case Study Report
You are required to complete a case study report that involves either the pursuit of a self-reflective task or assumes the role of an exercise and sport psychologist in analysing and formulating an intervention program. You can choose your selected case study from a pool of topics such as motivation, goal-setting, personality, pre-game preparation, coping under pressure, confidence and resilience.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Presentation (Oral)
You will develop and deliver a group presentation addressing the presenting issues and intervention strategies relevant to a case study. Topics include emotional regulation, concentration, team dynamics, and injury recovery.
Assessment: Examination (written)
Centrally administered examination including a combination of multiple-choice response questions, derived from lectures, tutorials, and readings, and the evaluation of a sport psychology-based case study, including demonstration of a potential intervention program.
Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.
