Overview

This is the capstone unit for the Property Economics degree.  It draws together the property theory, practice and application that has been covered throughout your course.   Over the semester, you will develop your analytical, problem solving and teamwork skills to deliver a client-ready solution in response to a real world property industry problem.  Through its applied setting and focus on contemporary societal property issues, the unit acts as a bridge between university studies and your career in the property industry.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Ideate, design and refine sustainable solutions for diverse, real-world property problems.
  2. Evaluate complex property data, theories and ideas to make property decisions
  3. Present solutions to diverse audiences through written, oral and visual communication
  4. Apply teamwork knowledge and skills and reflective practices in collaborating with others to apply property knowledge.

Content

This unit consolidates and builds on knowledge and skills you have developed throughout the degree.  It specifically consolidates your skills to ideate, design and present solutions to complex property problems via:

  • Interpreting and understanding explicit and implicit client needs
  • Collection and analysis of relevant data to inform your proposed solution
  • Building and refining solutions to complex property problems
  • Project management to deliver comprehensive and seamless group work
  • Proactively seeking feedback and direction to meet client needs
  • Socially and ethically responsible behaviours and actions in contemporary property contexts
  • Written and visual presentation of findings/recommendations

Learning Approaches

This unit employs a self-directed, reflective and collaborative approach to project-based learning in an authentic context, supported by lectures and tutorials.   You are encouraged to learn from each other through teamwork and discussion, as well as from the formal tutorial sessions, where you will be supported in your application of the concepts, theories and practices of property in light of real world challenges. Separate in person and online tutorials will be offered.

  • Marking rubrics will be provided to show the expectations for each assessment item.
  • Assessment feedback, as each piece of assessment helps to scaffold the final project report.
  • Formative assessment and feedback during tutorials and through peer collaboration

This unit will engage industry partners to provide professional feedback during the poster presentation.

Overview

The assessment in this unit is designed to support your achievement of the unit learning outcomes and course learning outcomes.  You will

  • receive feedback on your learning as you progress toward the development of knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes (formative);
  • demonstrate your learning in order to achieve a final grade (summative).

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Client Proposal

Acting as a property consultant, you will interpret a real-world client brief and prepare a comprehensive proposal to address the client’s diverse, real-world property problem. Your Proposal will outline your proposed scope of works, deliverables, timelines, and any other relevant details necessary to meet the client's needs as described in the brief.

Should your Proposal be accepted by the client, it will be delivered as a team in subsequent assessment items.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Assessment: Client Presentation

Your team will use a digital poster to present its preliminary findings based on a proposal developed in the previous assessment.  The presentation will be delivered to the client (represented by the teaching team, industry representatives and/or peers) to gather feedback. The presentations will always involve industry representatives. In this assessment you visually communicate your team’s complex theories, property data and ideas to the client and verbally respond to their impromptu questions. This feedback will be used to refine and finalise the project deliverables, which will be presented in the subsequent final report.

Individually, you will provide peer assessment of team members’ contribution.

Assessment: Final Report

This assessment has elements of group work and individual work.

Working in the project team from the previous assessment, you take on the feedback provided and submit your final report to the client.  It will detail your team’s recommendations in relation to the client’s real-world property problem.  Your solution will consider diverse stakeholders and knowledge of socially responsible actions in contemporary property contexts. 

You should include/and reflection on your team work and on responsible and ethical professional behaviours/practice, including consideration of any potential bias in your practices.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Length: 4,000 words (report) plus 500 words (reflection)

Academic Integrity
