Overview
This is the capstone unit for the Property Economics degree and draws together the theory, practice and property fundamentals that have been covered in the units studied to date. In this unit, you choose to address a current industry problem via one of two streams: a research project or redevelopment proposal. Working individually and in a group, you will create your solution under supervision from an industry/academic mentor. The expectation is that your work will be client-ready and add real value to how industry delivers research/development services.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Design, manage and complete an applied research project.
- Critically analyse and synthesis data to solve problems.
- Present solutions through written, oral and visual communication.
- Reflect on ethical and professional identity.
- Collaborate strategically in professional contexts to complete the project.
Content
This unit requires you to participate in either an applied research project from a selection of industry relevant topics or a redevelopment proposal on a nominated site and client brief. Content includes:
- Interpreting and understanding explicit and implicit client needs
- Ideating and designing solutions to complex property problems
- Collection and interpretation of relevant data to inform your proposed solution
- Building and refining solutions to complex property problems
- Project management to deliver comprehensive and seamless group work
- Written and visual presentation of findings/recommendations
Learning Approaches
This unit employs a self-directed and active approach to project-based learning in an authentic context. You are required to carry out the proposed project, with regular check-ins with your supervisor to make sure that the scope and direction of the research is on schedule.
Your participation in this unit includes:
- Engagement in tutorials with academics and industry professionals
- Experiential learning and reflective practice
- Industry/academic supervisor's feedback
- Active independent learning
This unit may include a site visit for the purposes of data collection (research and redevelopment streams).
This capstone unit will support you to reflect on and refine the specialised knowledge, mastery of theory and high level skills you have developed over the course of your study and apply these to a real world context. You will cultivate ways of working to identify problems, research the evidence base, build your confidence and ability to communicate findings as well as critically reflect on your role in leading and being part of an effective multidisciplinary team.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Feedback in this unit is provided in the following ways:
- Marking rubrics will be provided to show the expectations for each assessment item.
- Marking rubrics with summative comments will be returned to you via the online submission portal.
- Formative assessment and feedback will be based on discussions with supervisors.
- Fortnightly in person/online drop in consultations for specific projects/needs.
- Assessment feedback, as each piece of assessment helps to scaffold the final project report.
- Generic comments will be provided via QUT Canvas and in class.
- This unit may engage industry partners to provide professional feedback during the poster presentation.
- Informal peer feedback through group work.
You should reflect upon the feedback on your assessment in this unit (both your individual and generic feedback as provided on Canvas) for the purpose of identifying:
- gaps in your knowledge and understanding of research/redevelopment principles
- inadequacies in your problem solving methodology
- strategies to improve your collaborative problem solving, oral and written communication skills in further assessment
- areas for improvement for future studies, including property research strategies
- the connection between presenting your work according to client needs and your continued professional development as a property professional.
