Overview

In the challenging contemporary health system environment, rapidly adopting digital health technologies, managers will be required to provide organisational leadership to ensure that services meet continuously changing community needs and address service delivery challenges. Strategic leadership in the digital health domain requires the acquisition of knowledge and the development of competencies in leadership that may enable the future manager to address the current and future challenges that come with use of these complex technologies. The unit further develops skills in addressing contemporary problems in public health related to the management of digital health services. Students will be challenged to critically evaluate their leadership capabilities and philosophy.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply the principles and concepts of digital health leadership to organisational governance and the systems and structures required to exact governance.
  2. Apply the principles and concepts of quality management and continuous quality improvement in context of digital health services.
  3. Apply the principles and practice of policy development, planning and evaluation in context of digital health services
  4. Critically evaluate organisational performance, including financial management, and reporting.
  5. Analyse existing issues in cultural safety and their significance to digital health leadership.

Content

The unit will address the issues of importance in strategic leadership related to digital health.

It will include:

  • Enterprise Governance including clinical governance
  • Continuous quality improvement in technology enabled health services
  • Organisational performance and evaluation
  • Media and communications
  • Strategic policy, planning and evaluation
  • Community and staff engagement
  • Leadership
  • Change management.

Learning Approaches

The unit will be delivered in both internal and online mode. Both modes involve self-directed study.  Content for the unit will be delivered in real time with details to be provided in the Unit Information Guide provided to students in Week One of the semester. The block teaching (which will be conducted simultaneously face to face and online via Zoom) includes presentations from senior health and digital health industry leaders who will discuss key concepts and issues in health leadership and health service management. These leaders exemplify different leadership styles and characteristics. All students are encouraged to attend the block teaching either face to face or virtually. Recordings will be made available after the sessions.

Tutorials, conducted both face to face and online, will include specific case studies which enable you to discuss and debate issues confronted by digital health care leaders. Readings will be provided which provide a broad and diverse analysis of the current strategic issues in context of digital health leadership. You will be provided with links to strategic documents and to relevant texts for independent and group discussion and be required to identify additional relevant readings and resources to extend your critical thinking skills.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

This will take place through feedback from tutors and peers. Assessment will be spaced throughout the semester to provide the opportunity for feedback on your learning to that point. You will be provided with feedback on all your assessments as you progress through the unit.

Critical analysis of leadership approaches in digital health
A critical appraisal of the theories, concepts and principles required for leadership in digital health management including their application across a specific health care sector of interest or relevance to the student.

This assignment is eligible for the 48 hour submission period and assignment extensions.

Critical examination of a contemporary problem in digital health management
You will be asked in the form of a job application to critically examine a strategic digital health management and leadership role to identify the personal, organisational, cultural and systems factors health care leaders face, their impact on the exercise of effective leadership and to critically analyse the knowledge, skills and personal attributes required to be successful in these roles.

This is an authentic assessment because this task requires the analysis and application of knowledge and skills into a real-world context for mirrors professional practice.
