Overview

Health service managers require appropriate knowledge and competencies to address operational challenges facing health organisations. The ability to apply the foundational operational management competencies that underpin delivery of health services is a fundamental skill requirement of managers and clinician-managers of all professional backgrounds. This unit develops knowledge and competencies with sustainable operational management approaches required by health managers in complex systems and organisations. It also explores entrepreneurial approaches to operational health management issues.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply operational aspects of health management to improve the quality, sustainability and equity of care at an organisational level.
  2. Apply principles of financial management and human resource management in contemporary health contexts.
  3. Apply principles of project management when implementing change processes.
  4. Discuss information and knowledge management as they apply to digitally enabled healthcare environments.
  5. Identify and analyse appropriate information to support evidence based decision making.

This unit will cover the following operational aspects of health management:

  • Approaches to sustainable operational health management

  • Project management
  • Information and knowledge management
  • Entrepreneurial approaches to solving operational health management issues

Learning Approaches

In this unit, you will learn by engaging in the following:

In order to maximise your learning experience in this unit, preparation in advance of lectures and tutorial sessions, and active participation is expected of you. In addition to in-class learning, there will be opportunities for engaging with learning materials online, including recorded lectures and tutorials. You can engage with the online learning materials at your own pace.

 

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Assessment will be spaced throughout the semester to provide the opportunity for feedback on your learning at key points. You will be provided with individual and generic written feedback on each assessment item, based on specific marking criteria as you progress through the unit.

Overview

There are two assessments in this unit.

1. Business Case Workbook - This will consolidate the concepts about operational management, including financial and human resource management in response to healthcare management based questions.

2. Business Case Study - This brings together the concepts and strategies presented in the unit materials to be applied in a business case in order to provide a recommendation on an operational management issue.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Business Case Workbook

You will respond to four questions about sustainable operational management in a health services scenario. Each question will require a response of approximately 500 words. You will need to provide reference to relevant literature to support your responses. 

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Assessment: Business Case Study

You will take on the role of a health manager to undertake a critical analysis of operational management practices in a given healthcare scenario. You will need to apply entrepreneurial approaches to addressing a digital technology issue that has arisen in the given scenario. Drawing on relevant literature to support your analysis, you will develop a recommendation, implementation plan and suggested evaluation strategies for the healthcare setting's leadership group.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
